Is freedom of speech a universal human

right or just a value cherished by
intellectuals?”
z
Enemies of FREEDOM OF SPEECH
 Free speech may be important within our own secular
traditions, some critics say, but it would make no sense to
graft it on to very different styles of life.
 Hate Speech and Racism

 They say that though the right of free speech has been much
prized by liberal writers who profit from it, it has proved of
little value to the poor and disadvantaged.
 Pornography
z
Is it so important that we must tolerate, in its name,
despicable and harmful speech in our own society?

 If freedom of speech is a basic right, We can find it in a

condition of human dignity.

 It is illegitimate for governments to impose a collective or official

decision on dissenting individuals.

 unless that decision has been taken in a manner that respects

each individual’s status as a free member of the society.
z
Fair Democracy

 Fair Democracy requires that each citizen have not

just a vote but a voice.

 The majority has no right to impose its will on

someone who is forbidden to raise a voice in protest or
argument or objection before the decision is taken.
z

 if we intervene too soon in the process through which collective

opinion is formed, we spoil the only democratic justification we
have for insisting that everyone obey these laws, even those
who hate and resent them.

 When we compromise on freedom because we think our

immediate goals more important, we are likely to find that the
power to exploit the compromise is not in our own hands after
all.

ANALYSIS

 His writing style is originally bold.

 There would still be a minority that disagrees with that decision

made by the state.

 We can say that freedom of speech does not ensure that justice be
served as there have been various situations where people are
allowed to speak but are not always heard.
z

 . Dworkin defines human dignity is the right to free speech but

that is his own idea.

 For someone who is a victim of hate speech and racism, his

dignity might be destroyed due to freedom of speech.

 Last but not the least, I would like to add the argument about
the fallacy of free speech.
