SUBJECT – The topic of the sentence; what the sentence talks about
For Example:
1. Acting is fun.
2. Playing football is fun.
3. Reading takes us to places.
GERUNDS: WHAT ARE THEIR USES?
SUBJECTIVE COMPLEMENT – appears after a linking verb (is, are, was, were)
and tells something about the subject of the sentence.
For Example:
1. My hobby is reading.
2. Things that I hate to do are cooking, gardening, and sewing.
3. My favorite form of leisure as a child was playing.
GERUNDS: WHAT ARE THEIR USES?
OBJECT OF THE PREPOSITION – appears after a preposition (e.g.: in, on, of, to,
at, into, onto, unto, over, under, during, while, above, before, after, beyond,
around, etc.) and forms part of a prepositional phrase
For Example:
1. You can tell a lot about a fellow’s character by his way of eating jellybeans
(Ronald Reagan).
2. I’m not addicted to gambling, I’m addicted to sitting in a semi-circle (Mitch
Hedberg).
