Use Logical Reasoning
Use Logical Reasoning

• Logical reasoning is a very useful strategy

which may be used in all problem solving
situation.

• This strategy required students to use the

information they have been given in the
question to eliminate possible solutions to
finally discover the correct solution.
Use Logical Reasoning

Logical reasoning it may also be used

together with other strategies like Guess and
Check, Draw a diagram, and find a
Pattern.And the strategy of elimination,
which is commonly used by people in
everyday life. In problem solving context,
students must list and eliminate possible
solutions based upon information presented
in the problem.
Steps for solving word problem
using logical reasoning:

1.Read and Understand

2.Plan and Solve

3.Look back and Check

Example 1

Ann, Bob, Cathy and Derek

each work as a doctor, Lawyer, Teacher, or
Farmer. Use the clues to find the job of Ann,
Bob, Cathy and Derek.
Use the clues Below:

• Cathy is not a teacher or a farmer.

• Ann is either a teacher or a doctor.

• Derek is not a doctor or a farmer.

• The lawyer is a woman.

Ann Bob Cathy Derek

Doctor

Lawyer

Teacher

Farmer
Answer

Ann Bob Cathy Derek

Doctor √ x x x

Lawyer x x √ x

Teacher x x x √

Farmer

Example 3

Draw 2 straight
lines across the
face of a clock and
the sum of the
numbers in each
region is the same.
Answer

One region has

11+12+2=26, another
region has 10+9+3+4=26
and a third region has
8+7+6+5=26.
Solution: A logical reasoning :

Let’s examine the problem

logically if we add all 12 numbers on the
clock, we obtain 1 to 12 =78. Now, because
the sum within each region must be the
same , we divide by 3. That sum is 26. This
makes the work easier. The answer is
11+12+2=26,10+9+3+4=26 and
8+7+6+5=26
Direction: Use Logical Reasoning to solve the
problem.
