Abstract
• The traffic in debremarkos town have serious problem.
• The high increase in number of vehicles on road and increasing
urbanization leads to problem of death and ravage of resource.
• Debremarkos town already suffering in terms of operational
efficiencies of traffic management systems.
Background

• Debremarkos cities are undergoing many problems because of rapid

urbanization.
• Crowded traffic road causes a serious challenge for all large and growing
cities.
• crowded traffic and speed are one of the intolerable problems of the area
emerging
• Crowded road prevents the movements of traffic and journey of passengers
which leads to intolerable increase journey time death and resource ravage.
• The aim of the paper is used to provide practical guidance to manage traffic
speed and crowding to reduce impact on individual and society.
Objective of the study
General Objective
The main objective of the study is to examine the general ‘Traffic
Management’ practices of Debremarkos with particular reference on
the efforts to reduce road traffic problems and the challenges
Specific objectives are:
To review the existing road and traffic condition of Debremarkos city
To evaluate the existing traffic management arrangements being
practiced in the city.
Conti….

To identify the factors that hinder the efficient and effective
management of traffic in the city.
To identify the prospect of traffic management practice of the city.
Statement of the Problem
Due to this traffic congestion, there is possibility of accidents because
of poor traffic management.
To eliminate road accidents and to save precious human life it is
essential to find proper solution for traffic congestion.
In this proposal, traffic congestion problem in Debremarkos city is
identified and studied for finding out the causes and proposed solution
for it.
There has been a considerable loss due to the accidents to the precious
human life and to the vehicles to some extend in Debremarkos city.
Questionairee/ Hypothesis

• What is the existing road and traffic condition in the city?

• What are the major traffic problems in the city?
• What traffic management measures and alternatives are employed to
alleviate the road traffic problems in the city?
• What are the major challenges that hamper the traffic management
operational activities in the city?
• What policy direction and program are considered to sustain city short,
medium and long term transport and traffic management plan?
Litrature review
Road traffic accidents (RTAs), here defined as “An accident that
occurred on a way or street open to public traffic; resulted in one or
more persons being killed or injured, and at least one moving vehicle
was involved.
Thus, RTA is collisions between vehicles; between vehicles and
pedestrians; between vehicles and animals; or between vehicles and
fixed obstacles” (Persson2008).
According to (World Health Organization (WHO), 2009)report some
1.3 million people are killed each year in road crashes and a further 50
million people are injured. These numbers are likely to almost double
by 2030 unless action is taken.
Scope of the study
The study conducted in particular context of the Debremarkos city
and focused only on the city’s traffic management practice.
Traffic management broadly comprises the operational, technical,
administrative, and engineering measures which contribute towards
the smooth flow of traffic in the city.
In this study therefore, the operational, technical and administrative
measures will be addressed while engineering aspect will not be
studied in depth.
Limitation of the study

• Difficulty in gaining access to relevant information that pertains to the

study.
• Failure on the part of respondents to answer the questionnaires that
administered to them.
• Illiteracy and ignorance on the part of the respondents was another
factor that hindered progress of the study.
• A time constraint was also a limiting factor.
Methodology of the study
Questionnaire
A questionnare is a series of questions asked to individuals to obtain
statistically useful information about a given topic.
Used to collect factual information.
Consists ofa form containing a series of questions.
Questionnaire is a type of research instrument which entails a number
of questions which are aimed at gathering a particular type of
information from the respondents.

Interview
An interview refers to a controlled situation whereby a particular
person (interviewer) asks a number of questions regarding a particular
issue to another person (the respondent).
An interview in qualitative research is a conversation where questions
are asked to elicit information.
The interviewer is usually a professional or paid researcher,
sometimes trained, who poses questions to the interviewee, in an
alternating series of usually brief questions and answers
Conti….

 The purpose Interviews are most effective for

qualitative research:They help you to explain, better understand, and
explore research subjects' opinions, behavior, experiences,
phenomenon.
Significance of the study
Success in traffic management directly influences the efficiency of the
transportation network, the economic competitiveness of a city, and
the quality of life for the communities.
The study will also help to improve the quality of decision-making in
Debremarkos road transport management planning, to determine the
need for road improvements, vehicle inspections and to initiate
programs for educational purposes.

Conclusions and recommendations
Conclusion
The increase in economic activities of the city has resulted in a
massive migration of people from different parts of the border
wereda’s as well as from abroad.
This resulted in a tremendous population growth and spatial
expansion of the city which demand traveling of longer distance than
in the past.
Traffic management in the city is very minimum and infant in its
establishment and organization in the city.
conti….

 As a result many of the activities in traffic management aspect of the

city are not been accomplished though it is depicted as strategy in the
respective documents.
Recommendations

Thus Traffic management is essential to meet these needs:

shows that new roads alone will not be a long term solution and that
even with new roads, there is a need to offer it for efficient, to address
safety and to ensure that the road network is used effectively.
The road network should be robust enough to deal with recurrent
conditions and non-recurrent and unexpected situations – incidents,
events, construction and other unusual circumstances.
Conti….

The development of existing traffic management schemes in the City

is traditionally focused on the legislation of rules and regulation, and
their subsequent implementation or enforcement.
Such includes the provision of appropriate signage and road markings
throughout the network and the installation of traffic signals at critical
intersections.
