Topic:- Ignition System and Its

Types
INTRODUCTION

 The ignition takes place thanks to a group of

components working together, otherwise known as
the ignition system.

 The ignition system consists of an ignition coil,

distributor, distributor cap, rotor, plug wires and
spark plugs.
Types of Ignition System

 Battery ignition system

 Electronic ignition system
 Distributorless ignition system

1) Battery Ignition System

 The system in an internal-combustion engine that
produces the spark to ignite the mixture of fuel and
air: includes the battery, ignition coil, distributor,
spark plugs, and associated switches and wiring.

Ignition System
Components Used
 Battery
 Ignition Switch
 Ballast Resistor
 Ignition Coil
 Contact Breaker
 Capacitor
 Spark Plug
 Distributor:- 1. Brush type
2. Gap type
2) Electronic Ignition System
 An automobile ignition in which electrical pulses are
generated electronically, usually by transistors
controlled by sensing devices, without the use of
mechanically actuated breaker points.
Reluctor and Vacuum Advance

 The reluctor ring is mounted o the crankshaft so that

as the crankshaft rotates the magnetic sensor. The
magnetic sensor provides position information to the
electronic control module.

 The second method used to advance the ignition

timing is called vacuum timing advance. It
generally increases fuel economy and driveability,
particularly at lean mixtures.
3) Distributorless Ignition System

 The spark plugs are fired directly from the coils. The
spark timing is controlled by an Ignition Control Unit
(ICU) and the Engine Control Unit (ECU).

 It may have one coil per cylinder, or one coil for each
pair of cylinder. Some popular system use one
ignition coil per two cylinders.

Requirements of an Ignition System

 The ignition system should be capable of producing

high voltage current to produce spark across its
electrode gap.

 The spark must generate at correct time at the end of

compression stroke in every cycle of engine
operation.

 Ignition system should produce spark for sufficient

duration so that mixture can be ignited at all
operating speeds of automobile.
