interesting.

Jackie: Tell me about it.

George: Well, we’re looking at what schools should do.

Jackie: So, what do you think schools should do?

George: Well, I guess the first thing is to provide a good education that prepares
people for college or for the workforce.

Jackie: Right, but I think they also have to give people basic academic skills. People
have to be able to solve problems and research information and stuff.

George: Absolutely. So there needs to be an interesting curriculum with a wide range

of subjects, and the teachers should encourage students to think and
analyze, not just train t hem to memorize the facts.

Jackie: I certainly agree with that.

George: And I think that to do that, you need a good positive atmosphere where
students feel that they have a lot of support to express their ideas and
opinions.

Jackie: That definitely helps. And that means having small classes, too.

George: Yeah, And because thinking skills and creativity are so important, there
really needs to be a lot of hand-on activities – you know, group work and
project work. Classes need to be much more active, so that students aren’t
just passively listening all the time.

Jackie: I agree. And then there’s technology – you know, computer skills. People
need those.

George: Right. There definitely needs to be state-of-the-art technology.

Jackie: Hey, talking speaking of education, I have a class in five minutes. I’ll catch
you later. I’ll catch you later, George.

George: Okay. See you. Jackie.

Homeschooling
Homeschooling is a choice made by some
parents to provide education to their children
in their own homes. It’s popular in the
United States, and it is becoming more
popular in the United Kingdom, Australia,
South Africa, and Japan.

There are several advantages to

homeschooling. For example, parents choose
what their children learn. Because parents can teach their children one on one, they
often understand the curriculum better and more quickly, too. On the other hand, if
their children need more time to learn something, parents can work with them at a
slower pace. Parents also like to spend more time together as a family, and children
feel safe at home. A safe environment often leads to better learning.
There are disadvantages as well. Homeschooled students often feel lonely because
they don’t spend as much time with other kids their age. They don’t get to talk with
classmates about things like parents and homework. Parents also feel lonely because
they must spend time teaching children and don’t get to talk with adults at work. In
addition, homeschooled students sometimes cannot play school sports or participate in
other activities and programs available to people in a school.

Only you can decide if homeschooling is right for you and your family. Take the time
to do the research and consider the pros and cons.

Writing Formal letters and emails

A When do we write formal letters and emails?

B Do you know how to write a formal letter and email?

1Use a neutral e-mail address. Your e-mail address should be a variation of your real
name, not a username or nickname. Never use an unprofessional email address. No one will
take you seriously if your reply-to is monsigneur.harry.manback @slip’nslides.net.
2Use a short and accurate subject header. Avoid saying too much in the subject
header, but make sure it reflects the content of your email to a person unfamiliar with you. If
possible, include a keyword that will make the email content easier to remember and/or
search for in a crowded inbox. For example, “Meeting on March 12th” is specific enough that
the email topic won’t be mistaken for anything else but not so specific as to be distracting
3Use a proper salutation. Addressing the recipient by name is preferred. Use the
person's title (Mr. Mrs. Ms. or Dr.) with their last name, followed by a comma or a colon.
Optionally, you can precede the salutation with "Dear...". Using a last name is more formal
and should be used. If you don't know the name of the person you're writing to (but you really
should try and find one) use "Dear Sir/Madam" or "Dear Sir or Madam" followed by a colon.
4 Write the actual message. Be sure to get your point across without rambling; if it's
fluffed up, the reader may glance over the important details. Try to break up the message into
paragraphs by topic to make your message more logical and digestible. The email should be
no more than 5 paragraphs long and each paragraph should be no more than 5 sentences long.
 Insert a line break between each paragraph;
 Be sure to avoid informal writing.
5 Use the correct form of leave-taking. This will depend on your level of intimacy with
the recipient. Examples include:
 Yours sincerely,
 Yours cordially,

6 Sign with your full name. If you have a job title, include that in the line after your
name, and write the company name or website in the line after that. If you do not have a job
title but you have your own blog or website related to the content of the e-mail, include a link
to that below your name. If the e-mail is about a job, only include a career-related website or
blog, not hobbies or interests.
7 Proofread your message for content. Make sure you haven’t omitted any important
details (or repeated yourself). Reading your emailaloud or askingsomeone to proofread it is a
great way to get a different perspective on what you’ve written.
8 Proofread your message for spelling and grammar. If your email provider doesn’t
already providespelling and grammar options for you, copy and paste your email into a word
processor, revise it if necessary, and copy and paste it back into your email.
