Aim
To study and understand how landscape can be an integral part of designing an institutional
campus.
Objectives
• To understand how master plan is generated by using landscape as a structuring element for

Site planning and landscape development for IIM Nagpur

Title of research
Site planning and landscape development for IIM Nagpur

Preamble
The institutional and campus landscape design has a rich history. Since ages there have been huge
institutions that were developed for study and growth of the man. These campuses were always
designed keeping the built and the landscape form as one unified project, the inside outside co-
relation has had a huge impact on those who nurture themselves in these institutes. The project
demonstrates the way in which a development action is to take place, but with attention focused
on those aspects of the context (landscape) that might be considered institutional.

Aim
To develop a comprehensive master plan of an institute by using landscape as a structuring tool.

Objectives
• To generate a master plan using landscape as a structuring element for Institutional campus
• To give a symbolic identity to the campus through landscape.
• To design outdoor spaces which integrate certain virtues and help in providing conducive
environment to the users
• To address the campus design through the concept of sustainability i.e. considering the natural
energy (solar) in the design, to provide a zero water discharge system.
• To inculcate the campus culture through planning
• To capture the motto of the institute in landscape planning and designing.

Scope
To design a comprehensive master plan for IIM Nagpur

Specific tasks:
 Background / Supportive Study:
• Evolution of campuses
• Changing approach towards academic campuses
• Significance and philosophy of IIM in India
• History of Institutional campus and the ethos they provide
• Time and place
• Social background
• Cultural significance
• World view at that time
• Expression in art and science
• Expression in Architecture and Landscape Design
• 8Change in approach towards academic campuses post industrial revolution
• Influence of modern science
• Advancement in modern technologies
• Change in approach towards academic campuses and their goals
• Role of academic campuses in late 20th century
• Changing environmental crises and how academic campus integrate philosophies, ideas
related to environmental crisis into their planning system
• How contemporary landscape architects approach planning and designing of a campus or
how do they integrate landscape resources within the campus planning and design.

Case Studies
IIM Bangalore

Climate responsive landscape. Concept of glocal campus
Nalanda university
Case study focusing on sustainability in terms of resource use and overall campus
planning
IUCCA, Pune
Live case study focusing overall campus planning and how the typology of the institute
incorporated in the landscape
Stream park, Nanded city
Role of Landscape elements of the stream park
 Context study:
• Site location w.r.t the city
• Education in Nagpur
• Important institutions in Nagpur
• Why IIM in Nagpur?
• Culture of Nagpur

 Site and surrounding study

• MIHAN
• Landuse of immediate surrounding
• Tank adjacent to the site
• Vegetation palette
• Fauna

 Area of Demonstration :
Nagpur being the fastest growing city in terms of development and population the
demand for resources is increasing. In the process of its growth, the city has also tried to
cater the educational needs of the population. Being a logistics hub for the nation, it has
announced the upcoming of institutions of national importance such as IIM, AIIMS,
Symbiosis etc.
Indian Institute of management (IIM) campus is set on a 130 acre plot at MIHAN,
Nagpur. The project will act as a vehicle of demonstration as to how landscape acts a
tool for campus planning. The built fabric has to be linked through appropriate design
ideas which provides users with an essentially democratic setting, enriching their
opportunities by maximising the degree of choice available to them which makes the
place more responsive.
PROGRAM
Functional requirement of built and open space with area statement
Thematic/Intangible program-
The Institute would exhibit environmental consciousness – the campus would be fully solar-powered
in the upcoming phases. A zero liquid discharge system that minimizes water wastage is already
proposed in the construction. Not only the classrooms, but the green outdoors too, would serve as
discussion areas for students and faculty members. This particular feature would be unique to IIM
Nagpur. As an institution cognizant of its locale, the campus’ architecture would further emphasize
the orange motif that is emblematic of Nagpur. The motto of the institution captures the spirit of
constant striving for personal excellence as well as a collective quest and pursuit towards constant
unfolding of ever new vistas of higher/deeper realities.
