INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

Intercultural communication is a symbolic, interpretative,

transactional, contextual process, in which people from different
cultures create shared meanings. (Lustig and Koester, 2007)

interpretation of meanings, leading to misunderstandings.
A word can mean something to a person, and be different with another.

Because of a common language, people with different native languages, can interact and
exchange ideas without misunderstanding each other.

• Intercultural communication is not limited to verbal communication

Non-verbal communication like handshake, bowing, or eye-
contact also differs between groups, thus misunderstandings may
also occur due to misinterpretation of non-verbal cues.
