Comparative Adjectives: Rules
 Short adjectives + er
 Old = older
 Small = smaller
 Clean = cleaner

 1 syllable adjective (consonant + vowel +

consonant) + double last consonant + er
 Big = bigger
 Hot = hotter

 Adjectives ending in Y: - y + ier
 Easy = easier
 Heavy = heavier
 Early = earlier

 Irregular adjectives
 Good = better
 Bad = worse
 Far = farther

Superlative Adjectives: Rules
 Short adjectives + est
 Old = oldest
 Small = smallest
 Clean = cleanest

PART 3: AS … AS
Basic
 AS … AS …

We use AS ... AS ... to show that something is

the same or equal :

Jim is as tall as Peter.

I am as young as you are.

The Grand Hotel is as expensive as The Molokai Hotel.

I go out as much as you.

 NOT AS … AS …

We use NOT AS ... AS ... to show that something

isn’t the same , it is different :

She isn’t as tall as her mother. ( = Her mother is taller)

My car isn’t as expensive as yours. ( = Your car is more expensive)

I haven’t got as much money as you. ( = You have more money)

Rome is not as old as Athens. ( = Athens is older)

 Exercise: make sentences. Use as…as /
not as … as !
 Jill is 22 and Bob is 22. (old)
 Jill is as old as Bob.
 Jill is 1,65 and her mother is 1,68 (tall)
 Jill isn’t as tall as her mother.
 Terry weighs 71kg and Julia weighs 73kg (heavy)
 Terry is not as heavy as Julia.
 Tim has 1 dollar in the bank and Ben has 1 dollar in
the bank. (rich)
 Tim is as rich as Ben.
