SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

presented by Group 3
SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT – are
the activities and actions required
to manage waste from its inception

to its final disposal.

WHAT ARE SOLID WASTES?

A "solid waste" is defined as any
discarded material that is abandoned by
being disposed of, burned or incinerated,
recycled or considered "waste-like." A Solid wastes are any discarded or
solid waste can physically be a solid, abandoned materials. Solid wastes can
liquid, semi-solid, or container of be solid, liquid, semi-solid or
gaseous material. containerized gaseous material.

Solid Waste are also called as:

• a) Garbage: the term given principally to food waste, but may

include other degradable organic wastes.
• b) Rubbish: consists of combustible and non-combustible solid
waste, excluding food wastes.
• c) Refuse: the collective term for solid wastes, includes both
garbage and rubbish.
• d) Litter: odds and ends, bits of paper, discarded wrappings, bottles
etc. Left lying around in public places.

SOLID WASTE COLLECTION

• a crucial phase of waste management,

includes activities such as placing waste
collection bins, collecting waste from those
bins and accumulating trash in the location
where the collection vehicles are emptied.
Although the collection phase involves
transportation, this is typically not the main
stage of waste transportation.

INCINERATION

• Incineration is a waste treatment process that involves the

combustion of organic substances contained
in waste materials. Incineration and other high-
temperature waste treatment systems are described as "thermal
treatment".
-Wikipedia.org

• Burning is a very effective method of reducing the volume and weight of solid
waste, though it is a source of greenhouse gas emissions. In modern incinerators
the waste is burned inside a properly designed furnace under very carefully
controlled conditions.
• Incineration can reduce the volume of uncompacted waste by more than 90
percent, leaving an inert residue of ash, glass, metal, and other solid materials
called bottom ash.

COMPOSTING

• a biological process in which the organic portion

of refuse is allowed to decompose under carefully
controlled conditions.

• Composting offers a method of processing and

recycling both garbage and sewage sludge in one
operation.

SANITARY LANDFILL
• Sanitary landfills are sites where waste is isolated from
the environment until it is safe.

• A sanitary landfill is a pit with a protected bottom where

trash is buried in layers and compressed to make it more
solid.

RECYCLING
• Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into
new materials and objects. It is an alternative to "conventional"
waste disposal that can save material and help lower
greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling can prevent the waste of
potentially useful materials and reduce the consumption of
fresh raw materials, thereby reducing: energy usage, air
pollution (from incineration), and water pollution (from
landfilling).
