A GSM Based Low Cost Weather Monitoring

System for Solar and Wind Energy Generation

ABSTRACT:

• Renewable Energy is a pressing need in the 21st century as non-

renewable sources are no longer fit for our energy needs. This is
especially important in a country like India, where supply to demand
ratio is very low. In this paper, we intend to identify the geographical
areas for solar and wind energy generations at low cost. It is achieved
by monitoring atmospheric weather conditions, such as temperature,
humidity, wind speed and light intensity.
EXISTING SYSTEM:

• The purpose of this project is to design and implement a cost effective, portable
weather station to Measure and display different weather parameters.
Conventional weather stations are larger in size and incur a huge cost of
instalment, which is a limiting factor for developing countries. Although low cost
miniature systems are also available but they are of poor precision. The goal of
the project is to introduce an economical system that ensures flexibility,
portability, scalability and user friendly operations. The design incorporates
sensors and equipment to assess temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure,
wind speed, precipitation, presence of rain, UV index, dust density, ambient light
intensity and presence of different gas in the atmosphere. To measure wind
speed and precipitation, conducive mechanical structures are designed which can
be made from locally available materials. The system utilizes solar energy which
makes it a stand-alone system. Measured data through the developed system can
be uploaded to the web server and sent to the user through web page or through
text messages.
PROPOSED SYSTEM:
• We propose a system, which can predict whether a particular place is
suitable for establishing the solar power plant and/or wind power
plant. We designed and implemented a low cost and reliable
instrumentation system for remote wireless measurements of
weather, with the help of various sensors. Our model is easily
deployable by keeping it on top of a building, or being light in weight,
it can be floated with a balloon. The device is made as a standalone
data acquisition unit, from which data is sent via GSM based
communication to the ground station. A number of power saving
mechanisms are implemented to give maximum battery life for the
sensor module.

HARDWARE USED:

• Liquid crystal display

• Power supply
• Micro controller
• LDR sensor
• Hall Effect sensor

ARDUINO MEGA:
The Arduino Mega is a microcontroller board based on
the ATmega1280 (datasheet). It has 54 digital input/output pins (of
which 14 can be used as PWM outputs), 16 analog inputs,
4 UARTs (hardware serial ports), a 16 MHz crystal oscillator, a USB
connection, a power jack, an ICSP header, and a reset button. It
contains everything needed to support the microcontroller; simply
connect it to a computer with a USB cable or power it with a AC-to-DC
adapter or battery to get started. The Mega is compatible with most
shields designed for the Arduino Duemilanove or Diecimila.

Temperature sensor:
• The temperature sensor is used to identify the engine temperature
level if engine temperature is high it gives an alert message to the car
authenticated person
AMBIENT LIGHT SENSORS
• This article is about Ambient Light Sensors. Ambient light sensors are used to
detect light or brightness in a similar way as the human eye. They are used
wherever the settings of a system have to be adjusted to the ambient light
conditions as perceived by humans
HUMIDITY SENSOR
• Measurement and control of temperature and relative humidity finds
applications in numerous areas. These days devices are available
which have both temperature and humidity sensors with signal
conditioning, ADC, calibration and communication interface all built
inside them. The use of such smart sensors greatly simplify the design
and reduces the overall cost. We discussed in past about Humidity
and temperature measurements with Sensirion’s SHT1x/SHT7x
sensors. These sensors are capable of measuring both temperature
and relative humidity and provide fully calibrated digital outputs.
