Chernobyl dramatizes the story of the April

1986 nuclear plant disaster which occurred
in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist
Republic, Soviet Union, telling the stories of
the people who caused the disaster and
those who responded to it. The series
depicts some of the lesser-known stories of
the disaster, including the efforts of the
firefighters who were the first responders on
the scene, volunteers, and teams of miners
tasked with digging a critical tunnel under
Reactor 4.

• The accident, which occurred at reactor 4 of the
plant in the early morning of April 26, 1986, resulted
when operators took action in violation of the
plant’s procedures. Operators ran the plant at very
low power, without adequate safety precautions and
without properly coordinating or communicating
the procedure with safety personnel.
• The reactors were highly unstable at low power, due
to control rod design and “positive void
coefficient,” factors that accelerated the nuclear
chain reaction and power output if the reactors lost
cooling water
• These factors all contributed to an uncontrollable
power surge that led to Chernobyl 4’s destruction.
The power surge caused a sudden increase in heat,
which ruptured some of the pressure tubes 4 4
containing fuel.

One of the main ethical problems with Chernobyl is that
the Soviet Government kept it a Secret. Immediately
following the explosion of reactor 4 at the Chernobyl
Nuclear Plant, firefighters were sent to put out the fires.
The firefighters were never informed of the possibility of
nuclear radiation poisoning. As a result of this, the
firefighters did not wear their radiation suits and within a
few months most if not all of the firefighters died due to
radiation poisoning. Some of the firefighters went on to
the roof of reactor 4 in order to extinguish the main fire
and received high doses of radiation and died within the
next two weeks.

EVACUATION

• 50000 people from Pripyat,

Ukraine were evacuated 2 days
after the accident
• Most of the residents of
Chernobyl and nearby Pripyat
were evacuated to the provinces
around Kiev and Zhytomyr in
Ukraine

According to the official,

internationally recognized death toll,
just 31 people died as an immediate
result of Chernobyl while the UN
estimates that only 50 deaths can be
directly attributed to the disaster. In
2005, it predicted a further 4,000 might
eventually die as a result of the
radiation exposure

• A large increase in the incidence of thyroid

cancer has occurred among young
children and adults at the time of the
accident and lived. In the most
contaminated areas of Russian federation
and Ukraine
• This was due to the released of high levels
of radioactive iodine
• A large Russian study among emergency
workers has suggested an increased risk
of death from Cardiovascular disease in
highly exposed individual

CONCLUSION

• It is possible that if the safety test had

been postponed until a safer time, or the
facility shut down until the proper safety
features in place, the poor reactor design
would never have led to the disastrous
explosion that occurred within reactor 4.
• The accident has demonstrated the need to
establish and support high level national
emergency response system in case of
man- made accidents.
