TO AVOID COMMON DEFICIENCIES DURING
INTALLATION
TO STRENGHTEN THE “FRONT LINE” INSPECTION OF
BOTH QC INSPECTORS AND FOG DIRECT
SUPERVISION WHO MUST CHECK/VERIFY TO SEE IF
ALL OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE PROJECT HAVE
BEEN COMPLETED IN COMPLIANCE TO PROJECT
SPECIFICATIONS.
TO PROVIDE BOTH EXPERIENCED AND LESS
EXPERIENCED QUALITY CONTROL ENGINEERS /
INSPECTORS BACKGROUND IN THE MORE CRITICAL
JOB ASPECTS.

Packer Plates/
Leveling Plates - A steel plate placed in grout on top
of a concrete foundation to provide
a level surface for the lower end of
a steel column.
Columns - Structural member that has the primary
function of resisting axial force.
Beam - Structural member that has the primary
function of resisting bending moment.
Camber - Curvature fabricated into a beam or truss
so as to compensate for deflection induced
by bolts.
QA/QC Department
Diagonal Bracing - Inclined structural member
carrying primarily axial force in a
braced frame.
Braced Frame - An essentially vertical truss system
that provides resistance to lateral
forces and provides stability for the
structural system.
Fastener - Generic term for bolts, rivets, or other
connecting devices.
Girder - Same as beam.
Gusset Plate - Plate element connecting truss
members or a strut or brace to a beam
or column.
QA/QC Department
Load - Force or other action that results from the
weight of building materials, occupants and
their possessions, environmental effects,
differential movement, or restrained
dimensional changes.
Mill Scale - Oxide surface coating on steel formed
by the hot rolling process.
Plug Weld - Weld made in a circular hole in one
element of a joint fusing that element
to another element.
Splice - Connection between two structural elements
joined at their ends to form a single, longer
element.
QA/QC Department
Stress - Force per unit area caused by axial force,
moment, shear or torsion.
Stiffener - Structural element, usually an angle or
plate, attached to a member to distribute
load, transfer shear or prevent buckling.
Buckling - Limit state of sudden change in the
geometry of a structure or any of its
elements under a critical loading
condition.
Purlin - Horizontal structural member that supports
roof deck and is primarily subjected to
bending under vertical loads such as snow,
wind or dead loads.
QA/QC Department
Turn-of-nut
Method - Procedure whereby the specified
pretension in high-strength bolts is
controlled by rotating the fastener
component a predetermined amount
after the bolt has been snug tightened.

Magnetic Torpedo Level
Theodolite - Is a precision instrument for measuring
angles in the horizontal and vertical
planes.
Automatic Level - Is used to transfer, measure or set
horizontal levels.
Total Station - Is an electronic theodolite integrated
to with an electronic distance meter to
read slope distance from the
instrument to a particular point.
Tripod - An adjustable three-legged stand for
supporting transit.
QA/QC Department
Prism - Optical device having a triangular shape and
made up of glass or quartz; used to deviate a
beam or invert an image.
Stadia
Rod - A graduated rod used with a stadia to measure
the distance from the observation point to the
rod by observation of the length of rod
subtended by the distance between the stadia
hairs.
