PROJECT MANAGEMENT
PROJECT SCHEDULING

 Project scheduling is a mechanism to

communicate what tasks need to get
done and which organizational resources
will be allocated to complete those tasks
in what timeframe.
PROJECT SCHEDULING TECHNIQUES

P E R T (Project Evaluation and Review

Technique).
 C P M (Critical Path Method).
PERT
(Project Evaluation and Review
Technique)
 Project Evaluation Review Technique or PERT is
used to identify the time it takes to finish a
particular task or activity. It is a system that helps
in proper scheduling and coordination of all
tasks throughout the project.
CPM
(Critical Path Method)
 The critical path method (CPM) is a step-
by-step project management technique
for process planning that defines critical
and non-critical tasks with the goal of
preventing time-frame problems and
process bottlenecks.
P E R T and C P M Difference
Using P E R T and C P M in Project
Management.
Step-By-Step Process:
a) Construct the Project Network.
b) Find expected duration and variance of each
activity (only for P E R T).
c) Find critical path and expected project
completion time.
d) Probability of project completion.
P E R T and C P M sample Problem
O = Optimistic time(Shortest estimated time)
M = Most likely time(Estimated possible time)
P = Pessimistic Time(Longest estimated time)
A.) CONSTRUCT THE PROJECT
NETWORK.
 ACTIVITY = START OF NODE
 PREDECESSOR = END OF NODE
Note: Every activity need to have 2 nodes.
B.) Find expected duration and
variance of each activity.
FORMULA:
Mean Duration or Expected Duration

𝑶 + 𝟒𝑴 + 𝑷
𝑴𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝑫𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 =
𝟔
𝟐
𝑷−𝑶
𝑽𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 = ቆ ቇ
𝟔
C.) Find critical path and expected
project completion time.
Earliest Start Time (Forward) and Latest Completion Time (Backward)
FORMULA:
Earliest Start Time = Max (Previous Earliest Start Time + Mean Duration)
Latest Completion Time = Min (Previous Latest Completion Time – Mean Duration)
CRITICAL PATH CONDITIONS:
1. Starting node need to have equal E.S.T and L.C.T
2. Ending node need to have equal E.S.T and L.C.T
3. E.S.T ending node subtracted to E.S.T starting node must be equal to mean
duration of the activity

Add values of the mean duration of the critical path to determine the project
completion.
D.) What is the probability of
completing the project on or
before 22 weeks.
FORMULA:
𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒃𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒙 ≤ 𝑫𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆

𝑫𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆 − 𝑴𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝑫𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏

𝑷=ቈ ቉
𝑽𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆

𝑍 ≤ 𝑃 𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑁𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑙 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑏𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑇𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒
