PARTS OF SPEECH
.
The words that are used to form a
sentence may be classified into
eight different groups called parts
of speech.
NOUN
A noun names a person , a place, or a thing
Example 1: The trainer showed the computer to the students.
Analysis: trainer – names a person
computer – names a thing
students – names a persons
Example 1: The room is full of equipment.
Analysis: room – names a place
equipment – names a thing
PRONOUN A pronoun substitutes or takes the place of a noun

Example 1: Tony mentioned that he was available.


Analysis: he – substitutes for noun Tony

Example 2: She became the model faculty member.


She – substitutes for a noun (name of a person)

Example 3: Ilocos Sur is his home province. Its capital is Vigan.


his – takes the place of a noun
Its – substitutes for a noun Ilocos Sur (place)
VERB A verb is an action word.

Example 1: Tony measured the length of the string.


Analysis: measured – tells what the subject Tony did

Example 2: The woman collapsed because of the weather.


collapsed – tells what happened to the subject
ADJECTIVE Modifies or describes a noun or a pronoun.

Example 1: Our friend is honest and diligent.


Analysis: honest, diligent – describe the noun friend

Example 2: The large store sells good clothes.


ADVERB Modifies or describes a verb, an adjective, or adverb

Example 1: The instructor slowly demonstrated the operation.


Analysis: slowly – describes the verb demonstrated by
telling how

Example 2: Annie is always friendly.


Analysis: always – describes the adjective friendly by
telling when
PREPOSITION Connects the noun or pronoun following it to other
words in the sentence and shows relationship
between them
Example 1: I was walking over the bridge unaware of the strong
water current under it.
Analysis: over – show relationship between walking and bridge
CONJUNCTION join words, phrases and clauses

Example 1: Gloria and Lucy are quite ready to perform the experiments.
Analysis: and – joins the words Gloria and Lucy

Example 2: You may find the money in the drawer or under my pillow.
Analysis: or – joins the phrases in the drawer and under my pillow
INTERJECTION Word or words used to express strong and sudden
feelings such as surprise, fear, suspense, anger, pain,
and other emotions.
Example 1: Hey, stop doing that!
Analysis : Hey – express anger

EXERCISE 1
In the following sentences, identify what part of speech is each numbered word.

CLASSIFICATION OF NOUNS
COMMON NOUN – general name for a person, place, or thing.
Example: My classmates buy resistors, capacitors and transistors from
the electronics store.

PROPER NOUN – particular names of a person, place or thing. It is always


begins with a capital letter.
Example: Susan is taking up Electronics Technician at University of
Fatima in Pasay City.

CLASSIFICATION OF NOUNS
COLLECTIVE NOUN refers to a group of persons, places or things.
Example: The team went camping at Mt. Makiling.
The committee is now in their vacation.

ABSTRACT NOUN names an idea, quality, a feeling or a condition


Example: Filipinos believe in democracy. (idea)
With all humility, he accepted his artifice. (quality, condition)
We cannot comfort his sorrow. (feeling)

CLASSIFICATION OF NOUNS
MASS NOUN names a thing that cannot be counted but can be measured.
Example: May I have a cup of coffee?

State whether each of the following nouns is a common noun or proper noun; for
each common noun, write a related proper noun and for each proper noun, write
a related common noun. Example: teacher – common – Mr. Ramos

NUMBER OF NOUN
Singular and Plural Nouns Defined
A noun that names one of a kind has a singular number; a noun that
names more than one of a kind has a plural number.

HOW TO FORM THE PLURAL OF NOUNS


1. To make regular nouns plural, add -s to the end.
cat – cats
house – houses
2. If the singular noun ends in -s, -ss, - 3. If the noun ends with -f or -fe, the f
sh, -ch, -x, or -z, add -es to the end to is often changed to -ve before adding
the -s to form the plural version. wife –
make it plural.
wives
box - boxes wolf – wolves
boss - bosses
bush - bushes Exceptions:
roof – roofs
church - churches
belief – beliefs
gas - gases chef – chefs

letter before the -y is a consonant, add -es to make it plural.

Plural Noun Rules for Irregular Nouns
Irregular nouns follow no specific rules, so it’s best to memorize these or
look up the proper pluralization in the dictionary.

tooth – teeth foot – feet
mouse – mice person – people
