What is Direct Sentences?

one
Direct

PART ONE
Direct

Direct speech repeats or quotes the exact words spoken. When used in writing, we place words
between quotation marks (“ “), and no changes on words. We can REport something that is said
NOW (example, telepon conversation) or tell someone later about previous conversation.

Example
She says, "What time will you be home?"
She said, "What time will you be home?" and I said, "I don't know! "
"There's a fly in my soup!" screamed Simone.
John said, "There's an elephant outside the window."

PART TWO
Indirect

Indirect sentences are usually used to talk about past conversation. So, we need to change the
tenses. We use reporting verb like say, tell and ask. Also we can use that to introduce reported
words. We don't use quotation marks here.

Example
She said, "I saw him." (direct) = She said that she had seen him.
(indirect)
That could be removed:
She told him that she was happy. = She told him she was happy.
