The document describes a process for determining the clay content of a sand sample. A 50g sand sample is dried and mixed with water and sodium hydroxide solution to dissolve and wash away any clay. The mixture settles and the clay particles float, while the sand sinks. The clay-rich water is siphoned off and replaced until the water above the sand is clear, indicating all clay has been removed. The remaining sand is dried and weighed, and the percentage of clay is calculated from the original and final sand weights.

• Determined by dissolving or washing it off the sand
• 50g sample is dried at 105 to 110oC. • Dried sample is taken in a 1 litre glass flask and added with 475 ml of distilled water and 25 ml of a 1% solution of Caustic soda (NaOH 25g per litre) • This is then thoroughly stirred • After stirring for a period of 5 minutes, the sample is diluted with fresh water upto a 150 mm graduation mark and then left undisturbed for 10 minutes • The sand settles at the bottom and clay particles washed from the sand would be floating in water. Clay content
• 125 mm of this water is siphoned off the flask and it is
again topped to the same level and allowed to settled for 5 minutes. • The above operation is repeated till the water above the sand becomes clear indicating that all the clay in the moulding sand has been removed. • The sand is removed from flask and dried by heating. • The difference in weight of the dried sang and 50 g when multiplied by two gives the clay percentage in the moulding sand.
