CHAPTER 10

CELEBRAL PALSY
Cerebral palsy affects approximately one to three out of every
thousand children born. However, it is much higher in infants
born with very low weight in premature infants.
The following are some of causes of cerebral palsy:
• This may occur during the prenatal. This can be related to
events that happened during the pregnancy while the fetus is
developing inside the mother’s womb.
• Premature birth is also found as a risk factor. Premature brain is
at high risk of bleeding, and when severe enough can result in
cerebral palsy.
Other important causes of celebral palsy include accidents
of brain development, genetics disorder, stroke due to
abnormal blood vessels or blood clots, or infections of the
brain.
when cerebral palsy is the result of birth asphyxia, the
infant almost always suffers severe neonatal encephalopathy
with the following symptoms during the first few days of life.
• Seizures
• Irritability
• Jitteriness
• Feeding and respiratory problems
• Lethargy
• Coma depending on the severity
There are also rare instances for the causes of
celebral palsy such as obstetrical accidents
particularly during difficult deliveries that can
cause brain damage and result in cerebral palsy. In
this connection, child abuse during infancy can
also cause significant brain damage which in turn
can lead to cerebral palsy:
The following are the specific treatment plans for persons
with cerebral palsy:
1. Seizure medications- complete seizure control can often be
achieved using a single medication.
2. Medications for spasticity- treatment that involve the use of
medications and surgical procedures to decrease the spasticity,
facilitate movement, and prevent contractions.
3. Surgery for spasticity in case of severe muscle spasticity,
surgery may serve as a valuable option.
4. Physical, occupational and speech therapies are also advisable
when necessary.
5. Since there is limited hope for the cure of person with
disabilities, medical care can be applied ( diets, herbal
medicines, aromas, play with animals and hyperbaric oxygen).
ESSAY ( CEREBRAL PALSY)
Below is an essay written and typed by 25 year old,
Kathleen Cruz using her toes. She is also a book
author. In her essay she describes the Persons with
Disability and she was grateful that her parents took
very good care of her. She was hopeful that other
children with special needs are able to receive special
attention and their needs are met.

Ako si Kathleen Cruz, 25 years old, may cerebral

palsy.
matalino, magaling, may talent na kahit na may
kapansanan sila?
Oo, ako madaming kilala na may talent, matalino at
mabait.

may kapansan o nilalayuan mo sila?
INTERVIEW
Cerebral palsy
Children with cerebral palsy feel that body parts are
hard to move, and have difficulty in mobilizing them.
Since their actions are limited, they are motivated to do
something like engaging themselves into arts. Usually,
even if these children are disabled, they express
themselves well in arts. They have wide imagination.
However, they have difficulty expressing themselves
verbally. What’s good about children with cerebral palsy
is that most of them are intelligent. One case cited, was
a boy with cerebral palsy who received a first honor
award in an elementary school.
At first, the boy was just at home, the parents
were encouraged regarding the potentials of the child
and they were enlightened. This serves as an
accomplishment, because many people realized that
not because a child is disabled, he will just stay in a one
corner, rather his talents and skills should be
developed.
