What is Barricade?
- an improvised barrier erected across a street or other
thoroughfare to prevent or delay the movement of opposing
forces.

More..
CLASSIFICATION OF BARRICADING

SOFT BARRICADE
- are those that use an approved tape to prevent or restrict
access to an area. They are suitable in situations where
physical protection by use of a safety barrier system is not
warranted.

SOLID BARRICADE

- a self-supporting fence, or a self-supporting series of

continuous plastic, concrete or other solid barriers,
erected or placed to restrict the entry of persons to an
area.
METHOD OF BARRICADING

CAUTION BARRICADE

- Used to inform personnel of an uncontrolled

hazard within the barricaded area.

RESTRICTED ACCESS BARRICADES /

DANGER
- To prevent unauthorized personnel from accessing the
barricaded area.
METHOD OF BARRICADING

ELECTRICAL WORK BARRICADE

- Restrict access to electrical hazards.

HIGH VOLTAGE TESTING BARRICADE

- Used around the item under test to provide a minimum

safe approach distance.
REMOVAL OF BARRICADES

- Barricades and tapes shall be removed once they

are no longer required.

CONSTRUCTION WORK AREA

- For work which is part of a construction activity

including where a principal contractor is appointed.
“DANGER – CONSTRUCT WORK AREA” signs shall be
used.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Manager
The Manager Operations shall ensure that this procedure is
implemented and maintained through the operations.

Coordinators and Supervisors

Shall ensure the:
- Maintenance if the barricade in accordance with the
procedure
- Suffiency of the supplies

Employees and Contractors

Shall ensure that:
- They do not access a barricaded area unless the conditions detailed
on the barricade sign are compiled
- They monitor and maintain the condition of barricades in their work
areas.
What is Scaffolds?
- a temporary structure on the outside of a building, made
usually of wooden planks and metal poles, used by workers while
building, repairing, or cleaning the building.

TYPES OF SCAFFOLDING

SUPPORTED SCAFFOLDING

- most commonly used form of scaffolding and is the type

that you will see being used in construction work and on
most other forms of work where elevation is required.

SUSPENDED
SCAFFOLDING
- are platforms suspended by ropes, or other non-
rigid means, from an overhead structure.
TYPES OF SCAFFOLDING

AERIAL LIFT SCAFFOLDING

- is any vehicle-mounted device used to elevate personnel.

- should be used where workers need to be able to access a
number of levels in order to be able to complete a construction.
RISKS
Slips and Falls
- Falls account for almost half of all scaffolding accidents.
- It is a significant risk because it can result in fatalities, especially from
high structures.

Bad Planking
- Often happens due to poor scaffold design techniques, use of the wrong materials,
or poor maintenance of the scaffold over time.

Falling Debris
- Of all scaffolding accidents that commonly occur, falling debris is part of the 72%
of accidents related to slips and falls.
RISKS
Electrocution
- Workers are often at risk when setting up the scaffold, moving it, or while
working with certain tools near the lines.

Scaffold Preparation
- Another scaffolding risk that tends to be overlooked is the risk of poor
scaffold assembly and preparation.

Poor Personnel Training

- To reduce the risk of human error resulting in scaffolding hazards, make sure
all workers are adequately trained before using the scaffold.
FALL HAZARDS

Falls may occur:

 While climbing on or off the scaffold
 Working on unguarded scaffold platforms
 When scaffold platforms or planks fail
PROTECTING WORKERS FROM FALLS
Guardrails
- Must be installed along all open sides and ends of platforms

TYPES OF GUARDRAILS
• Along the Front Edge – not more than 14 in. from the work. For lathing and plastering, a gap of 18
in. is permitted
• Top Rails – should be no less than 38 and no more than 45 in. tall
• Midrails – placed halfway between top rail and platform. For construction work, midrails may
not be spaced more 19 in. apart.
• Toeboards – atleast 3-1/2 in. high. Open spacing between the toe board and platform can not
exceed ¼ in.
FALL PROTECTION REQUIREMENTS

Personal Fall Arrest Systems (PFAP)

- Must be trained how to properly use PFAP. It includes anchorage, lifeline and body harness.

Fall Protection Requirements

• Can use PFAS instead of guardrails on some scaffolds.

• Use PFAS and guardrails on suspension of scaffolds.
• Use PFAS on erectors and dismantlers where feasible.
FALLING OBJECT PROTECTION

 Wear hardhats
 Barricade area below scaffold to forbid entry into that area.
 Use panels or screens if material is stacked higher than the toeboard
 Build a canopy or erect a net below the scaffold that will contain or deflect falling objects.

More..
ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF SAFE SCAFFOLD
CONSTRUCTION

- Use appropriate scaffold construction

methods

- Proper scaffold access

- Properly use a competent person

SCAFFOLD PLATFORM CONSTRUCTION

Platforms must:
 Be fully planked or decked with no more than 1 inch gap
 Be able to support its weight and 4 times maximum load
 Be atleast 18 inches wide
 No large gaps in front of edge of platforms
 Each abutted end of plank must rest on a separate support surface
 Overlap platforms atleast 12 in. over supports unless restrained to prevent
movement
SCAFFOLD PLATFORM CONSTRUCTION

Platforms must:
 No paint on wood platforms
 Use scaffold grade wood
 Fully planked between front upright and guardrail support
 Component pieces used must match and be of the same type
 Erect on stable and level ground
 Lock wheels and braces
SUPPORTED SCAFFOLDS

Foundation – scaffold poles, legs, posts, frames and uprights must be on base
plates and mud sills or other firm foundations.

Supports – platforms supported by legs, outrigger beams, brackets, poles

uprights, posts and frames.

Restraints – guys, ties and braces must be installed at locations where

horizontal scaffold components support both inner and outer legs.
