What is the Conflict Over?

- Catalonia wants to gain independence from Spain.

- The groups involved in the Catalonia conflict are Spain and


Catalonia, during 2017-2018
- The conflict was a political conflict between the government of
Spain and Generalitat de Catalunya
- The Generalitat de Catalunya is government of Catalonia, is the
institutional system by which Catalonia politically organizes
its self-government.

What are the Origins of Conflict?

- Catalonia was once an independent country (Kingdom of Aragon)


- When the marriage between Ferdinand of Aragon & Isabella of
Castile occured, the two countries united and became one.
- When Spain went to war with France (1600s), they imposed taxes
on Catalonia without their knowledge.
- After the war with France, Catalonia permanently became a part
of Spain.
- During the financial collapse of 2008, Catalonia began pushing
for independence. *Catalonia has its own language
(Catalan), parliament, flag,

Current Status and the Future

- In October 2019, Spain's Supreme Court sentenced nine Catalan


politicians and activists to jail between nine and 13 years for
that independence bid. Three others were fined.
- Following thousands of protesters took to the street in protest
- Catalonia is now independent from Spain as of Oct. 27 2017
passed in parliament
- Although some still consider Catalonia in a gray zone and they
are still under Spain’s rule
