The approach focuses on ensuring that communities and their members are "free from fear". SAFE AND SECURE COMMUNITY • Like community safety and citizen security, it promotes a multi-stakeholder approach that is driven by an analysis of local needs. • By emphasizing the "community" aspect the concept seeks to embrace both cultures and contexts that are "individual-oriented", including many in Latin America, and cultures and contexts that are "group oriented", as are many in Africa and South Asia. BUILDING SAFER COMMUNITIES • Personal safety is a human right. It is a necessary condition for human development, improved quality of life and enhanced productivity. When communities do not feel safe and live in fear, the country’s economic development and the people’s wellbeing are affected, hindering their ability to achieve their potential. BUILDING SAFER COMMUNITIES • Safety and security are directly related to social-economic development and equality. A safe and secure country encourages economic growth and transformation by providing an environment conducive to employment creation, improved education and health outcomes and strengthened social cohesion. PROMOTING POSITIVE MENTAL HEALTH IN SCHOOL WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ISSUES AFFECTING YOUNG PEOPLE? • Exam pressures. The overwhelming pressure and number of exams can have a significant effect on students’ mental health. Students are stressed by the amount of information they need to know and the pressure to succeed. Most are also fearful that a poor grade will ruin their future. • The modern technological world.
