3D Printing

What is 3D printing
3D printing
3D printing is a kind of additive
manufacturing in which an object is created by
building up successive layers of material. CAD Model

3D printing allows us to quickly and cheaply

make complex objects without expensive
molding and casting tools.

Stereolithography
History Of 3D printing
- In 1984, Charles Hull made 3D-printing history by inventing
stereolithography. Stereolithography lets designers create 3D models
using digital data, which can then be used to create a tangible object.
-In 1992, Bill Clinton played sax on The Arsenio Hall Show—and 3D
Systems (Charles Hull’s company) created the world’s first
stereolithographic apparatus (SLA) machine
-That same year, startup DTM produced the world’s first selective laser
sintering (SLS) machine—which shoots a laser at a powder instead of a
liquid.
- In 2005, Dr. Adrian Bowyer’s RepRap Project launched an open-source
initiative to create a 3D printer that could basically build itself—or at least
print most of its own parts.

Working Principle of FDM 3D printers

FDM works on an "additive" principle by laying down

material in layers

Terminologies In FDM
Slicing: Turning a 3D model into 2D layers used for 3D
printing
Filament: Material used to build 3D printed parts
Extruder: The “hot glue gun” of your 3D printer; it uses
filament to draw out the layers of 3D printed parts
Build Plate: Surface on which 3D prints are built

-Can be created using sculpting or
any computer graphics application
such as Meshmixer, blender, Maya, z-
