PRINCIPLES AND BASIC

TECHNIQUES F IMAGE
MANIPULATI N
What is the difference between
photo editing and photo
manipulation?
Photo/Image Editing -signifies the regular process used
to enhance photos and create them.

Photo/Image Manipulation - includes all simple

editing techniques and have some manipulation
techniques.
PHOTO EDITING
PHOTO MANIPULATION
FIVE PRINCIPLES
F
IMAGE
1.CONTRAST -Cutting between two different
scenarios to highlight the contrast between them.
2. PARALLELISM - You can connect two
seemingly unrelated scenes by cutting between
them and focusing on parallel features.
3. SYMBOLISM - More intercutting, you move
from your main scene to something which creates
a symbolic connection for the audience.
4. SIMULTANEITY - Cutting between two
simultaneous events as a way of driving up the
suspense.
5. LEITMOTIF - This ‘reiteration of theme’
involves repeating a shot or sequence at key
moments as a sort of code.
BASIC TECHNIQUES
OF IMAGE
MANIPULATION
1. Rendering your images
- Cutting out image and carrying it to where we
will use it for a manipulation .
2. Shadows
- When you're going to make one you want it to be
as realistic looking as possible; but not realistic in
the way that you see flying cars or magical
dragons. Realistic in the way that every item has a
shadow if it needs one and every item is
proportional to everything else on your canvas.
Photo manipulations are made so that you can
bring out things that would never happen in the
real world.
3. Proportion
- proportion is probably one of the most
important things a person has to grasp if he wants
to do photo manipulations. You can not have your
dog bigger than your house, or your horse bigger
than your car. You have to remember that images
that are supposed to be far away have to be
smaller than the ones that are closer to you.
4. Texture use
- Textures don’t necessarily add to realism of your
art, but they do add a nice kick to blend all your
images together. Blending is a huge part of photo
manipulation, so textures are something you have
to carefully pick out. Textures add to the depth of
your art. If you are trying to go for a photo
manipulation that is dark and dirty looking you
can use a rough ground surface as a background
texture; or if you are looking for something
smoother you can use paper, or a wall texture.
5. Picking stock images
- Selecting stock images is the first thing you
should do after you already have your idea. You
have to remember that you can not always cut
out every stock you have perfectly, as some stock
images are sometimes just taken at bad angles, or
have slight blurriness, so you wont be able to use
them.
6. Color blending
- Not every image you use is going to match your
background, your texture, or even your other
images. So that is where color blending comes in.
Things like Photo Filters and Gradient Maps are
used in Photoshop to either add or take away
color in your images. This either gives a certain
image that little boost of color, or takes away that
extra color.
This helps the images blend with one another
and most importantly form a nice coherent
work of art.
7. Emphasis on detail
- When creating a piece of art set one area as the
main focus. You have to draw viewers eyes
instantly to that spot. There are multiple
techniques to do that. One way is to work on
focusing attention on the most vibrant, colorful or
sharp area in the design.
8. Combining multiple images
- Combining multiple images are like puzzle
pieces. You may need to look at multiple stock
images before choosing the right ones for your
composition. You need to plan your composition,
consider where the stock images will go decide
the kind of images you’ll need to find. In your
design you can use a multitude of images,
but they all have to flow properly, and be used to
your advantage.
9. C4D uses
- C4D’s are 4D images made from a program named
cinema 4D. They are often these abstract works.
They can be used to enhance the feel of your work,
and give it an even nicer look.
10. Enhancing stock images
- Stock images are often plain. It is your job to turn
them into something more attractive to the eye.
This is where stock enhancement come into play.
BASIC IMAGE
MANIPULATION USING
OFFLINE OR OPEN-
SOURCE SOFTWARE
Photos editing and designing tools
allow you to manipulate or edit images,
apply effects, filters, add frame, crop,
add text, change background color,
make photo collage, and photo album
that you would like to do in an image.
Usable Platform and Application

1. Picasa
2. Paint.net
3. Google Sketch Up
4. Autodesk Pixlr
5. adobe Photoshop
6. GIMP
Picasa is a discontinued image organizer and image
viewer for organizing and editing digital photos, plus
an integrated photo-sharing website, originally
created by a company named Lifescape (which at that
time may have resided at Idealab) in 2002. Picasa is a
free online photo-sharing tool provided by Google.
Once a user downloads Picasa, it automatically locates
photos on the user's PC and moves them to Picasa.
The program then allows users to edit photos, compile
and organize albums and share photos online.
     Paint.net (stylized as Paint.NET or paint.net) is a
freeware raster graphics editor program for Microsoft
Windows, developed on the .NET Framework.
Google Sketch Up - a 3D modelling program from
Google that is known for its ease of use. Used for
architectural
purposes
as well as
films and
games
designs.
Autodesk Pixlr - Photographers may already be
familiar with Pixlr, Autodesk’s browser-based photo
editor, and its mobile companion Pixlr Express for iOS
and Android. Today, Autodesk announced Pixlr in a new
format: a desktop version for Mac and Windows. The
new desktop edition offers many of the mobile Pixlr’s
extensive collection of tools such as fun stylize filters
that turn your photos into sketches and watercolor
paintings. New entries such as a double exposure
option and Influence Masks can be used to correct
photos,
perform
advanced
edits or
create
photo-based
artworks.
Adobe Photoshop - An image editing software
developed and manufactured by Adobe Systems Inc.
Photoshop is considered one of the leaders in photo
editing software. The software allows users to
manipulate, crop, resize, and correct color on digital
photos.
GIMP - ( /ɡɪmp/ GHIMP) (GNU Image
Manipulation Program) is a free and open-source
raster graphics editor used for image retouching and
editing, freeform drawing, converting between
different image formats, and more specialized tasks.
