Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet)
 distinctive shadow plays among Asian
dramas which evolved and grown most
fully in Java and Bali, Indonesia.
 make used of flat puppets that are cut
and designed with intricate patterns
 shadow images can be shown when
projected on cotton screen with an oil
lamp (blencong).
 accompanied by gamelan orchestra.
“Wayang” means “puppet”
1. Kingdom era – used grass in making a
puppet.

“Kulit” means “skin” and refers to the
leather construction of the puppets that
are carefully shaped with very fine tools
and supported with carefully shaped
buffalo horn handles and control rods.

Elements of Wayang Kulit
1. The Puppets – sizes range from 6 inches
to more than 3 feet which are mounted
on sticks from a buffalo horn
- complete sets of puppets 300 – 400
figures.
- performance starts at 8:30pm and last
until dawn or it will last from 9 – 10
hours for the whole performances.

include:

•a hammer used by the dhalang to knock on the
puppet box, cempala
•metal plates that the dhalang hits with his
foot, kepyak
•a traditional Indonesian orchestra, gamelan
•shadow puppets, wayangkulit
• a light source, blencong
•female singers and a male chorus,
pesindhen and penggerong
•a screen frame and screen, gawang and
kelir; the main focus of the performance
•banana logs, gedebok; the pointed sticks
of the wayang base handle pierce the
