Definition
Electronic Commerce or EC -- is the buying and selling of goods and services,
or the transmitting of funds or data, over an electronic network, primarily the
internet.
Web Server
Web server can refer to either the hardware (the computer) or the
software (the computer application) that helps to deliver content that
can be accessed through the internet.
The most common use of web servers is to host web sites but there
are other uses a such as data storage or running enterprise
applications.

Browsers
A web browser is a programme/application designed to display the internet with web pages,
a few examples are Opera, Windows internet explorer and Google Chrome.
Server Software
Software is required in order for the server to run, the software manages the connections
and the server, a few examples of home server software are

3. Apache

TCP/IP Address
Each computer must have a unique IP address.
TCP/IP uses four numbers to address a computer. The numbers are
always between o to 255.
IP addresses are normally written as four numbers separated by a
period, like this : 192.168.1.50
TCP/IP is used when transferring data across a network. If computers
do not use the same protocol, it becomes impossible for the data to
be understood.

Ports and Protocol
The protocol is the type of connection you are running through,
examples are HTTP ( Hyper Text Transfer Protocol), SSH( also referred
to as Secure Shell), DNS ( Domain Name System) and FTP ( File
Transfer Protocol).
The port name is the connection you are going through, each device
that is connected to the network will have its unique port number.

Database System
A database system is the database a company use, to link with a
website.
It can contain many things that will be changed by users of the
website.
The database will store passwords, names, addresses, store items
and other business information.

Domain Name
Domain name is the main section of a website.
Google is an example : http://www.google.co.uk/ “google” is the
domain name. The extensions (.com) (co.uk) are used in different
countries, companies such as google have many servers in different
countries.

Programming Requirements
Web pages are usually written in html.
Within this code other languages can be used such as PHP, ASP and
javascript.
HTML itself does not provide e-commerce capabilities so another
language must be used as well.

Download Speeds
Internet speed is measured in Kbps and Mbps. A KB( Kilo bit) is
roughly 1,000 bits and MB is roughly 1,000, 000 bits.
Browser and Platform capabilities
There are many different web browsers, such as google chrome,
windows internet explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
But each browser renders graphics in different ways. The browsers
interpret the code and must be taken into consideration when
designing a website.
Trade Cycle
A trade cycle is the series of exchanges between a customer and supplier, that take
place when a commercial exchange is executed.
A general trade cycle consists of:
Pre-Sales: Finding a supplier and agreeing the terms.
Execution: Selecting goods and taking delivery.
Settlement: Invoice ( if any) and payment)
After Sells: Following up complaints or providing maintenance
Commercial transactions that are repeated on a regular basis, such as
supermarkets replenishing their selves, is one category of trade cycle.
Consumer trend to be once-off ( or at least vary each time) and payment is made at
the time of the order.
E-Commerce and the Trade Cycle
E-Commerce can be applied to all, or to different phases, of the trade cycle. The trade
cycle varies depending on:
The nature of the organizations (or individuals) involved.
The frequency of trade between the partners to the exchange.
The nature of the goods or services being exchanged. The trade cycle has to support
Finding goods or services appropriate to the requirement and agreeing the terms of
trade (referred to as search and negotiation).
Placing the order, taking delivery and making payment (execution and settlement).
After-sales activities such as warrantee, service, etc.

Electronic Markets
An electronic market can be described as the use of
information and communication technology to present a
range of offerings available in a particular market segment.
This helps the purchaser to compare prices and other
attributes such as discount , quality and take actions.
Railway booking , bookmyshow etc.
Electronic Data Interchange
Electronic data interchange implies a standard system that can be
used for coding trade transactions and communicating directly from
one computer to the other.
In such system there is no need of paper work such as bills/invoices
and thus eliminates many human errors.
The major sector where EDI is being used is Large super market
chains
