GENRE – ordinarily
regarded as a
literary or artistic
category.
The MAIN literary
genres are:
1. Prose
2. Poetry
3. Drama
PROSE – a writing that
is similar to everyday
speech and language. Its
form is based on sentences
and paragraphs.
PROSE FORMS:
1. FICTION
2. NONFICTION
FICTION – a prose narrative
in which the situations and
characters are invented by the
writer. In prose texts such as
novels, novellas, short stories,
and folktales, the characters
are imagined by the author.
FICTION allows the reader to
explore new worlds, share the
joys and sorrows of the
characters, and learn from the
invented experiences of others.
NONFICTION – a prose
narrative such as biographies,
autobiographies, and essays,
deals with real people, paces,
things and events.
Writers of nonfiction keep the
following in mid as they write:

1. a topic or an idea to present;


2. an objective or purpose for
presenting the idea;
3. readers and audience

Work with a partner. On your


notebook, list down the titles of
5 fictional prose and 5
nonfictional prose you are
familiar with.
POETRY – consists of
language with a strong musical
quality in which the words are
highly charged with meaning.
They also use structural
elements such as line length
and stanzas.

5. SONNETS
6. HAIKU
LYRIC POEMS –
highly musical verses
that express the
observations and
feelings of a single
speaker.
NARRATIVE POEMS
– poems that tell a story.
EPICS – long, narrative
poems, written in a dignified
style, that celebrate the
adventures and achievements
of one or more heroic figures
of legend, history, or religion.
BALLADS – songlike poems
that tell a story, often dealing
with adventure and romance.
SONNETS – form of rhyming
lyric poetry with 14 lines that
follow an iambic pentameter
rhyme scheme; each line has
10 syllables; and every other
syllable is accented.
HAIKU – special type of
poetry from Japan, consists of
17 syllables arranged in 3
lines; 5 syllables in the first
line, 7 in the second, and 5 in
the third. (5-7-5)
DRAMA – a story told in dialogue
by performer before an audience. It
includes television plays, radio plays
and even movies. In drama, actors
make a world come alive before an
audience. Like fiction, the elements
of drama include character, setting,
theme and plot.
DRAMA FORMS:
1. COMEDY
2. TRAGEDY
3. MELODRAMA
4. FARCE
5. HISTORICAL DRAMA
COMEDY – a type of
drama that is humorous and
has a happy ending.
TRAGEDY – a drama form
in which the main character,
often a person of a dignified or
heroic stature, suffers a
downfall. The downfall may
result from outside forces or
from a tragic flaw, a weakness
within the character.
MELODRAMA – a drama
form that is full of exciting
events and in which the
characters and emotions seem
to be too exaggerated to be
real.
FARCE – a funny play for
the theatre based on
ridiculous and unlikely
situations or events.
HISTORICAL DRAMA – a play
that takes place in the past and is
based on real events. In many of
these plays, the characters are
also based on real historical
figures. The dialogue and action
are mostly created by the
playwright.
