ABSTRACT
 The eye directive wheel chair is a mobility-aided device for person with physical disabilities or chronic
diseases.

 There re various interface for wheel chair available in the market , still they remain under-utilized , the reason
being ability , power and mind presence required to operate them.

 In this model , we use optical eye tracking system to control powered wheel chair.

 Obstacle detection sensors are connected o the Arduino to provide necessary feedback for proper operation of
the wheel chair and ensure users safety . The motor attached to the wheel chair support differential steering
which avoids clumsy motions.

INTRODUCTION
 Many people are suffering from quadriplegia around the
world , which affect their fore limbs.

 The eye monitored wheel chair will help their movements

which makes their life easy.

 The laptop webcam will capture their eye movements by

that the wheel chair can be moved to desired direction.

DESIRED MOVEMENT
BASIC DEVICES
 WIRELESS CAMERA:
Eye of the user is captured with a pin hole wireless camera which transmits the images to the base
station wirelessly.
 COMPUTER BASE STATION:
The images received from the camera from the camera are processed using open source computer vision
library and the gaze movement is sent to the chair via X-Bee communication.
 MICROCONTROLLER:
They are used to maintain wireless communication protocol and on the receiver side , it also take care of
obstacles and manual user input.
 MOTOR DRIVER:
They provide the high current required to drive the motors.
WORKING
 The series of images taken by the camera is transmitted to the base station ( computer or
laptop ). The images are processed using open source computer vision library ( open CV ).
 Open CV processing yields the length and width of the detected object. The length and
width of the each quadrant is prescribed in the open CV algorithm.
 The position helps to calibrate the quadrant in which the pupil lies , which helps us to find
the direction in which the eye is pointing.
 The processing basically divides the image in three quadrants. If the position of the pupil
lies in the right quadrant then the wheel chair moves left . If it lies in the left quadrant ,
wheel chair moves right.
 If the object lies in the centre the wheel chair moves straight.
OPERATION MODE
The user’s eye movement forms the basis of the entire system . The
movement of the eye balls is continuously tracked using a wireless
camera . This camera is mounted in front of the eye such that the focus
remains on the eye movement .

On receiving appreciated command the receiving Arduino directs the

motion in the required direction. The motor exhibits differential steering
mechanism ensuring swift turning.

MERITS
 Less
expensive than the congenital automatic
wheel chair.

 Obstacle detection using IR sensors.

 Front wheel drive provides high maneuverability

DEMERITS
 Required smart phone for operation as accelerometer is
the main device over which the main system is
dependent.

 Battery recharging is needed so smart phone battery and

battery to drive the motor have to periodically recharge
and maintained.
APPLICATION
 In hospital for handicapped patients.

 It can be used by an elderly or physically challenged

person to move inside the home without any difficulty.
CONCLUSION

Lot of work needs to be done before making the product

commercially available. Need to work on wheel chair movement
when the person is just casually glaring in different directions . we
can incorporate certain sequences for turning ON and OFF
electrical devices or door locks . Lot of safety precautions need to
be taken.
