The Impact of Rice Combine

Harvester Machine to the Farmers of

Barangay Bagumbayan Llanera
Nueva Ecija.
Chapter 1
The Problem and Its Background
Introduction

Technology has without doubt an impact on the

society. It has an effect on the growth of one’s
economy, of one’s culture, and of one’s living
standards. However despite of these improvements it
create, it is important to note that the benefits are a
double-edged sword with some being beneficial and
other being detrimental.
In the past few years, in terms of agriculture,
patterns of technological integration in rural areas or
rural mechanization have taken on a new implication
with concerns about rural employment. It has been
found out that the spread of modern agricultural
equipment as means of technological integration has
been accompanied by the intensification of agriculture
and other rural economic activities but it has also been
accompanied, in most cases, by some workers
particularly farm labourers leaving rural areas and
finding employment in urban areas and in the overseas
remittance economy.
Years ago, harvesting period was a great advantage for these
farmers for they were also hired as manual reapers by the rice field
owners. These farmers then gain profits from their labor through an
agreed rice sharing system with their employer – the rice field
owners. But recently, one type of mechanical equipment that has
grown rapidly in popularity is Combine Harvester. It is a technology
that combines harvesting, threshing, cleaning, and in some
instances, bagging, in one operation (Praweenwongwuthi,
Laohasiriwong, and Rambo,) (2007).
Statement of the Problem
This study aimed to determine the economic impact and the opinion of
how they were satisfied of the use of rice combine harvesters in the lives of
rice field farmers in Barangay Bagumbayan Llanera Nueva Ecija.
It specifically tried to answer the following questions:
What is the personal profile of the participant farmers when grouped
according to the following variables:
◦ Gender,
◦ age
◦ civil status and
◦ financial status.
2. Do you like the performance of the rice combine harvester?
3. Quality of the rice combine harvester that you use?
Scope and Delimitation

This study will focus on the impact of

the use of Rice Combine Harvester by of
the farmers in Barangay Bagumbayan,
Llanera Nueva Ecija.
Significance of the Study
The study will be beneficial to the following people in the academe:
Farmers, are benefited through developing more efficient equipment. Although they will
be aware and will be educated to this research.
Local government units, they will be benefited as used this research used an idea and
information.
Students, are benefited to information and have awareness of Rice Combine Harvester.
Teachers, they will be benefits of the Rice Combine Harvester as information to educate
students.
Agricultural Technology Manufacturers, may use as information to have an basis to
make new adaption to the new generation of agriculture era.
Other Researchers, as this may provide them additional material for reviews and
additional insight on how to begin with their next research.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
Foreign Literature
Rice combine harvesting is popular among farmers due to a labor
shortage and high wage labor. This condition impacts on the rapid
expansion of business of rice combine harvester service. The objective of
this research was to evaluate the service characteristics of rice combine
harvester for farmer and factor affecting the use of combine harvester.
In Thailand, mechanization has played a key role in agricultural
production, especially for rice combine harvesters due to labor shortages
in rice harvesting. The combine harvester is economic and less labor
machinery (Tahir et al., 2003) compared to manual harvesting that is
laborious and costly (Hossain, 2015). The number of rice combine
harvesters showed a significant increase from 6,780 machines in 2003 to
1,582,613 machines in 2013 (National Statistic, 2015) that more than 99%
of rice combine harvesters are operated on custom-hire service basis
(Thepent, 2014).
Similarly, the numbers of combine harvesters in Viet
Nam, Banglades and Sri Lanka have shown an
increasing trend because of a high outflow of rural
labor to urban areas leading to be a labor scarcity in
rice harvesting period (Hossain et al., 2015
Local Literature

The Rice Combine Harvester makes the harvesting

process easier by combining six operations such as
gathering, transporting, reaping, threshing, cleaning and
bagging into one machine. It is the modern and efficient
way of harvesting rice. It also provides our farmers comfort
in operation and ease in maintaining their machines.
Adamco carries RCHs known for high work efficiency and
excellent performance in wet and dry fields. With a rice
combine harvester, farmers have the power to harvest at
their own time of choosing –no need to wait for available
labour and no need to worry about approaching typhoons.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research design

Researchers will conduct this study using

phenomenological qualitative research design so that
it will be easy to elaborate any information about the
opinions and answer of the farmers of Barangay
Bagumbayan Llanera Nueva Ecija
Research locale

The study took place in Barangay Bagumbayan, formerly Poblacion is a barangay in the
municipality of Llanera, in the province of Nueva Ecija. Its population as determined by the 2015
Census was 3,400. This represented 8.56% of the total population of Llanera.
Sampling design

The researchers will use the total population of

the farmers in Barangay Bagumbayan Llanera
Nueva Ecija, and therefore no sampling design
will be used.
Research Instruments

The principal tool that was used in this study was a guided questionnaire.
The questionnaire was supplemented with observation to verify some of the
written responses to the items. Questions that were not understood by the
participant farmers in the question were elaborated and explained further by
the researchers. The researchers utilized follow-up questions only when
participant’s answers were not clear. The first part included questions on
personal data of the respondents such as sex, age, and financial status. The
second part of the questionnaire included questions with regard to the
consequences or effects of rice combine harvester to the overall employment of
the participant farmers and the alternative activities & occupations they sought
in order to cope with the prevalence of rice combine harvesters.
Data Gathering Procedure

Data for the study will be gathered using survey questionnaire.

Part 1 of the survey questionnaire will be used to gather data about
the students’ profile in terms of gender, and financial status.
Part 2 will be used to gather data about the perceived answers of the
farmers.
Part 3 is an open ended question that will show how the farmers
show their opinions on the Rice Combine Harvester equipment.
