OPENING SONG
“Lift Every Voice and Sing”
UMH 519
Lift ev'ry voice and sing,
Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the list'ning skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith
that the dark past has taught us;
Sing a song full of the hope
that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun
Of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.
Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chast'ning rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn
had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our people
sighed?
We have come over a way
that with tears has been watered;
We have come, treading our path
through the blood of the slaughtered;
Out from the gloomy past,
Till now we stand at last
Where the bright gleam of our bright star
is cast.
God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
You who have brought us
thus far on the way;
You who have by your might
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places,
our God, where we met you;
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine
of the world, we forget you;
Shadowed beneath your hand,
May we forever stand,
True to our God, true to our native land.
Call to Worship
Leader: The prophets of old spoke of God’s justice,
even when it was unwelcome.
Who will hear their message?

All: We will listen and we will hear!

Call to Worship (cont.)
Leader: Responding to God’s call, Jesus traveled,
preaching and teaching all who would listen.
Who will hear his message?

All: We will listen and we will hear!

Call to Worship (cont.)
Leader: Christ sent out disciples two by two,
to spread the good news in any place
that would welcome them.
Who will hear their message?

All: We will listen and we will hear!

Call to Worship (cont.)
Leader: God’s prophets are among us still,
around the world and in these pews.
Who will hear their message?

All: We will listen and we will hear!

OPENING HYMN
“Spirit of God”
FWS 2117
Verse 1
Spirit of God, bright Wind,
breath that bids life begin,
glow as you always do; create us anew.
Give us the breath to sing,
lifted on soaring wing,
held in your hands, born on your wings.
Chorus:
Alleluia! Come, Spirit, Come!
Alleluia! Come, Spirit, Come!
Verse 2
Spirit of God, bright Dove,
grant us your peace and love,
healing upon your wings for all living things.
For when we live your peace,
captives will find release,
held in your hands, born on your wings.
Chorus:
Alleluia! Come, Spirit, Come!
Alleluia! Come, Spirit, Come!
Verse 3
Spirit of God, bright Hands,
even in far off lands
you hold all the human race
in one warm embrace.
No matter where we go,
you hold us together so,
held in your hands, born on your wings.
Chorus:
Alleluia! Come, Spirit, Come!
Alleluia! Come, Spirit, Come!
Verse 4
Spirit of God, bright Flame,
send us in your holy name,
the power to heal,
to share your love everywhere.
We cannot fail or fall, or know defeat at all,
held in your hands, born on your wings.
Chorus:
Alleluia! Come, Spirit, Come!
Alleluia! Come, Spirit, Come!
Verse 5
Spirit of God, in all, we gladly hear your call,
the life in our hands that sings,
the power of your wings.
Born of your grace we rise,
love shining in our eyes,
held in your hands, born on your wings.
Chorus:
Alleluia! Come, Spirit, Come!
Alleluia! Come, Spirit, Come!

SERMON

”Choosing Your Battles”

Welcoming Reverend Ali DeLeo
Pastor Mele:
Dear friends, today we welcome Rev. Alison
DeLeo, who has been appointed to serve as
Minister of Congregational Care at National
United Methodist Church and preaching
pastor at the Wesley campus. We praise God
for her appointment by Bishop LaTrelle Miller
Easterling.
SPRC Chair
Rev. Ali DeLeo, you have been sent to live
among us as a Congregational Care Minister
to reach out with love to those within our
church and community who are hurting,
grieving, home bound and in need; to ensure
each member knows he or she is loved and
important to the body; to serve as a bearer
of the Word of God; a minister of
Sacraments; and a sustainer of order for the
people of God.
Pastor Ali
Today I affirm this commitment in
the presence of this congregation.
SPRC Chair
Brothers and sisters in Christ,
As a people committed to participate in the
ministries of the Church
by your prayers, your presence, your gifts,
your service, and your witness,
Will you support and uphold Rev. Ali DeLeo in
these ministries?
We affirm our commitment to support
you with our prayers, our presence, our
gifts, our service, and our witness.
Pastor Mele: Let us pray,

All: Lord God, bless the ministries of

your church.
We thank you for the variety of gifts
you have bestowed upon us.
Draw us together in one Spirit,
that each of us may use our differing
gifts as members of one body.
May your Word be proclaimed with
faithfulness,
and may we be doers of your Word
and not hearers only.
As we have died and risen with Christ in
baptism
may we be one in service to others,
In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Pastor Mele invites the congregation to lay
hands on Rev. DeLeo, to offer the blessing as
all are gathered around her.

The Lord bless you and keep you;

The Lord make his face to shine upon
you, and be gracious to you;
The Lord lift up his countenance upon
you, and give you peace. Amen.
TIME OF COMMITMENT

“Taste and See”
.
Taste and see that the Lord is good,
you tried everything that you thought
you could.
Taste and see that His love is real,
open up right now,
let your heart be filled.
With peace overflowing,
joy everlasting,
love so amazing, taste.
Life so exciting, hope so inviting,
all who are crying to be free;
taste and see, taste and see,
taste and see.
Taste and see that His Word is true,
you've been hurt before,
He won't lie to you
Oh taste and see never thirst again,
Every broken heart
Jesus Christ will mend.
With peace overflowing,
joy everlasting,
love so amazing, taste.
Life so exciting, hope so inviting,
all who are crying to be free;
taste and see, taste and see,
taste and see.
