Spreading Education
He defines education as ‘the manifestation of the perfection already in man.’

In his scheme of education, meticulously

includes all those studies, which are necessary
for the all-around development of the body,
mind and soul of the individual.
These studies can be brought under the broad
heads of physical culture, aesthetics, classics,
language, religion, science and technology.
The Birth of the Indian Institute of Science
(IISc , Bangalore)
This perfection is the realization of the infinite power
which resides in everything and every-where-existence,
consciousness and bliss.
Education, in Vivekananda’s sense, enables one to
comprehend one’s self within as the self everywhere.
Swamiji lays great stress on physical health because a
sound mind resides in a sound body. He often quotes
the Upanishadic dictum ‘nayamatma balahinena
labhyah’; i.e. the self cannot be realized by the
physically weak.
Swamiji, the mind of the students has to be controlled
and trained through meditation, concentration and
practice of ethical purity.
Areas of Study
• Ramayana
• Mahabharata
• Bhagvad Gita
• Vedas and Upanishads
• Teaching of aesthetics or fine arts
• Other areas of study were in the field of

Relevance to the Current Context
i. “They alone live who live for others, the rest are more
dead than alive.”

ii. “There is no chance of the welfare of the world, unless

the condition of women is improved. It is not possible for
a bird to fly on one wing”

iii. “Take up an idea, make that one idea your life, think of it,
dream of it, live of it, let the brain, muscle, nerves, every
part of your body be full of that idea and just leave every
other idea alone. This is the way great spiritual giants are
produced, others are mere talking machines.”
and at the end . . .
and his words in his last days:

“It may be that I shall find it good to get outside

my body, to cast it off like a worn out garment.
But I shall not cease to work. I shall inspire men
everywhere until the whole world shall know
that it is one with God.”
….. Go Well then…..
