What is Livestock?

Types of feed

1. Starter Feed
✢ is given to 10 to 20 kgs.

2. Grower Feed
✢ given until the pigs reach a weight of 60 kgs.

3. Finisher Feed
✢ up to 80 to 90 kgs ready for the market

What can you feed to your pig?

✢ Commercially prepared swine rations from markets.


✢ Vegetable, fruit or bread scraps
✢ Restaurant leftovers
✢ Forest Products
✢ Alcohol distilling residues

What you shouldn’t feed to your pig?
✢ Any meat products
✢ Any carcass
✢ Any fish products and bones
✢ The excreta (droppings) of any mammal or bird
✢ Household, commercial or industrial waste

Daily Feed Requirements

Dry/pregnant Sows and Gilts


✢ require 2.5kg a day of sow and weaner meal.

✢ Give an extra 1kg/day one week

✢ Give lactating sows 2.5 kg a day of sow and weaner meal

Boars
✢ Give boars 2.0 kg a day.

✢ regularly used increase this to 2.5 kg

Piglets
✢ Give creep pellets 0.5 - 1.0 kg a day from day 7 up to

weaning time (21 days) per piglet.


Feeding of Growing and Finishing pigs
✢ Pigs weaned at 3 - 5 weeks of 11 - 13 kg body weight should

continue being fed on the starter diet until they reach 18 kg


live weight.

Drinkers

All pigs need sufficient clean drinking water.


✢ A pregnant sow requires 10 - 12 litres of water per day.

✢ A lactating sow requires 20 – 30 litres of water per day.

✢ A growing pig requires 6 - 8 liters of water per day.

✢ A boar requires 12 - 15 liters of water per day.

What is Poultry?

✢ are feathered animals such as chickens, ducks, geese, etc.

Chicken Feed Terminology

Pellets:
✢ Chicken feed is made into pelletized form for ease of use

and decreased waste.


Crumbles:
✢ Pellets that have been reduced to chick size pieces for ease of

eating.

Mash:
✢ is basically unprocessed feed

✢ used for chicks or adults and it can be fed dry or wet.

Fermented:
✢ been mixed with water and allowed to ferment naturally.

Medicated
✢ been treated with a coccidiostat to help chicks to overcome

any possible attack by coccidian protozoa.


Un-Medicated:
✢ Chick feed without a coccidiostat.

TYPES OF POULTRY FEED
1. Starting poultry feed:
✢ all mash ration to be fed to chicks up to the age of 8 weeks.

✢ you use from the point of hatching

✢ chicks will eat this from hatch until they are six weeks old

2. Growing poultry feed:
✢ after 8 to 20 weeks or until laying commences.

✢ slightly less protein at around 18%

✢ general does not contain as many vitamins.
