STRESS

• It is defined as a state of extreme difficulty,


pressure or strain.

• It is the body’s reaction to any change that


requires an adjustment or response.
STRESS
• The concept of stress was developed by Hans
Selye (1936).

• Stress reaction known as the “General


Adapatation Syndrome”
3 COMPONENTS OF STRESS
• Stimulus- an agent that directly influences or arouses an activity
• Response- the action or feedback of the body to challenging
situations.
3 Kinds of Response
a. Alarm- resistance and exhaustion. (happens when recognized the
threat)
b. Resistance- desires either to confront the stressor (fight) or to run
away from the stressor (flight).
c. Exhaustion- body resources will be depleted.
• Relational- condition between persons and the situations they
are in.
Types Of Stressors (Eustress Vs. Distress)

1. Eustress- which is a term for positive


stress, and

2. Distress- which refers to negative stress.


Eustress has the following
characteristics:

•Motivates, focuses energy.


•Is perceived as within our
coping abilities.
•Feels exciting.
•Improves performance.
•Is short-term.
Examples of positive personal stressors
include:
• Receiving a promotion or • Moving.

• Marriage. • Retiring.
• Buying a home. • Taking educational

Distress has the following characteristics:

• Causes anxiety or concern.


• Can be short- or long-term.
• Is perceived as outside of our coping
abilities.
• Feels unpleasant.
• Decreases performance.
• Can lead to mental and physical
problems.
Examples of negative personal stressors
include:
• The death of a spouse. • Separation from a spouse or
