What is Water Conservation?

Water conservation is a practice in which

people, companies, and governments
attempt to reduce their water usage.
WATER is essential to life on earth.
If water is constantly being cleaned
and recycled through the earth’s
water cycle, why do we need to
conserve it?
The answer is that people use up our planet’s
fresh water faster than it can naturally be
replenished.
Simple Ways To Conserve Water
• When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water
run while rinsing.
• Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only
when they are full.
Simple Ways To Conserve Water
• Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered
and not the house, sidewalk, or street.
• Plant in the fall when conditions are cooler
and rainfall is more plentiful.
• Use the garbage disposal sparingly.
Compost vegetable food waste instead and
save gallons every time.
• Water your lawn and garden in the morning
or evening when temperatures are cooler to
minimize evaporation.
• Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of
water instead of running water from the
tap.
Water conservation in the home
1. Check faucets and pipes for leaks
2. Don't use the toilet as an ashtray or
wastebasket
3. Take shorter showers.
4. Turn off the water after you wet your
toothbrush
5. Don't let the faucet run while you clean
vegetables
WHY CONSERVE WATER?
1. It
is a resource that is a benefit to
everyone.
2. To save money.
3. To keep rates low.
4.To prepare for a drought.
5.To comply with regulations.
TWO TYPES OF PRACTICES
1. Engineering practices

2. Behavioral practices
“I would ask all of us to remember that protecting
our environment is about protecting where we live
and how we live. Let us join together to protect
our health, our economy, and our communities --
so all of us and our children and our
grandchildren can enjoy a healthy and a
prosperous life.”
