An Evangelism-filled Life
How many of you have ever heard this expression:
“Go ye means go me”?
Do you believe this is true?

3
“Go ye means go me”?
• It makes a nice, catchy title for a book, but let’s
look at the context.
• Where did the phrase originate?
 With Jesus – in the “Great Commission”

4
The Great Commission
• Matt. 28:18-20 – “All authority in Heaven and on
Earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and
make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in
the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey
everything I have commanded you. And surely I
am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

KJV: “…Go ye therefore, and teach all nations…”

5
The Great Commission
• Matt 28:18-20 – “…go and make disciples…”
• Mk 16:15-16 – “Go into all the world and preach
the good news to all creation. Whoever believes
and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not
believe will be condemned.”

6
The Great Commission
• Matt 28:18-20 – “…go and make disciples…”
• Mk 16:15-18 – “Go into all the world and preach
the good news to all creation. Whoever believes
and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not
believe will be condemned. And these signs will
accompany those who believe: In My name they
will drive out demons; they will speak in new
tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands;
and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt
them at all; they will place their hands on sick
people, and they will get well.” 7
“Go ye means go me”?
• It makes a nice, catchy title for a book, but let’s
look at the context.
• Where did the phrase begin?
• To whom was He speaking?
 To the eleven – Matthew 28:16 & Mark 16:14.

themselves as they sat at meat….”
 Mark 16:14

“Go ye means go me”?
• It makes a nice, catchy title for a book, but let’s
look at the context.
• Where did the phrase begin?
• To whom was He talking?
• Is it reasonable to assume that “go and make disciples
of all nations” and “go into all the world” would be
meant to apply to every Christian for all time?
• On the other hand, is it reasonable to assume that
some of us have no responsibility for evangelism
of any kind?
10
What is our responsibility?

What about this passage?

“Always be prepared to give an answer to
everyone who asks you to give the reason for the
hope that you have. But do this with gentleness
and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that
those who speak maliciously against your good
behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their
slander.” 1 Peter 3:15-16

11
What is our responsibility?
“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord.
Always be prepared to give an answer to
everyone who asks you to give the reason for the
hope that you have. But do this with gentleness
and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that
those who speak maliciously against your good
behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their
slander.” 1 Peter 3:15-16

12
Romans 12:4-8
“Just as each of us has one body with many members, and
these members do not all have the same function, so in
Christ we who are many form one body, and each member
belongs to all the others. We have different gifts,
according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is
prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is
serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is
encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the
needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership,
let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do
it cheerfully.”
13
Gifts
• Paul itemizes a different list in 1 Corinthians 12:
8
“To one there is given through the Spirit the message
of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by
means of the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same
Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10to
another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to
another distinguishing between spirits, to another
speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still
another the interpretation of tongues.”
• What’s the common thread here?
14
Gifts
• The common thread is:
“To one…through the Spirit...to another…of the same
Spirit...to another…of the same Spirit...to another…by
that one Spirit...to another...to another...to another...to
another...and to still another….”
• So what’s the common thread here?
It is the same Spirit that provides the gifts, but they are
different for each individual.

15
Gifts
• Paul itemizes a different list in 1 Corinthians 12:
 message of wisdom, message of knowledge, faith, gifts of
healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, distinguishing between
spirits, speaking in…tongues, interpretation of tongues
• Still another list in Ephesians 4:
 11
“It was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be
prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors
and teachers…”

16
Gifts
• Paul itemizes a different list in 1 Corinthians 12:
 message of wisdom, message of knowledge, faith, gifts of
healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, distinguishing between
spirits, speaking in…tongues, interpretation of tongues
• Still another list in Ephesians 4:
 11
“It was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be
prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors
and teachers, 12to prepare God’s people for works of
service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13until
we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the
Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole
measure of the fullness of Christ.”
17
Okay…
…so perhaps a better title for our lesson would
be…

18
A Christian Life is…

A Ministry-filled Life
Do any of you recognize the little
girl in this photo?

20
What about this photo? Does it
look familiar?

21
Maybe this will help?

22
Eva Hart was the little
girl in the picture.
She was 7 years old
and was traveling in a
second class cabin with
her parents, Benjamin
and Esther Hart, on the
maiden voyage of
Titanic.
Eva's mother was not
happy about sailing on
the Titanic and refused
to leave the cabin
except to eat meals.
23
She also stayed awake
all night long and slept
during the day.
After the collision,
Esther woke her
husband and daughter
and went to
investigate.
Eva and her mother
were rescued in
lifeboat 14. Benjamin
died.
Eva died in 1996. 24
Before her death in 1996, Titanic survivor Eva Hart
remembered the night, April 15, 1912, on which the
Titanic plunged 12,000 feet to the Atlantic floor, some
two hours and forty minutes after an iceberg tore a
300-foot gash in the starboard side: "I saw all the
horror of its sinking, and I heard, even more dreadful,
the cries of drowning people."

25
Although twenty life-boats and rafts were launched-
too few and only partly filled-most of the passengers
ended up struggling in the icy seas while those in the
boats waited a safe distance away.

26
Lifeboat No. 14 did row back to the scene after the
“unsinkable” ship slipped from sight at 2:20 AM.
Alone, it chased cries in the darkness, seeking and
saving a precious few. Incredibly, no other boat
joined it.

27
Some were already overloaded, but in virtually every
other boat, those already saved rowed their half-filled
boats aimlessly in the night, listening to the cries of
the lost. Each feared a crush of unknown swimmers
would cling to their craft, eventually swamping it.

28
"I came to seek and to
save the lost," our
Savior said.
And He commissioned
us to do the same.
But sometimes we
face a large obstacle:
Fear.

29
While people
drown in the
treacherous
waters
around us,
we are
tempted to
stay dry and
make certain
no one rocks
the boat.
30
While the Great Commission may have been
given specifically to the eleven, we as
Christians still do have some responsibilities.

31
What is our responsibility?
“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord.
Always be prepared to give an answer to
everyone who asks you to give the reason for the
hope that you have. But do this with gentleness
and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that
those who speak maliciously against your good
behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their
slander.”
1 Peter 3:15-16

32
What is our responsibility?
“And the Lord's servant must not strive, but be
gentle towards all, apt to teach, forbearing, in
meekness correcting them that oppose
themselves; if peradventure God may give them
repentance unto the knowledge of the truth, and
they may recover themselves out of the snare of
the devil, having been taken captive by him unto
his will.”
2 Timothy 2:24-26

33
What is our responsibility?
So yes, we do have some responsibility in
seeking and saving the lost. We can all do
some personal evangelism in order to lead
others who are lost and dying around us to a
knowledge of the Lord.
We may not be instructed to take the gospel
ourselves into all of the world, but we can take
into our own neighborhoods.
