Roles of the Filipino Artists:
1. Personal (Social Critic)- the artist expresses what he or
she feels
- exposing the inequalities of life, the effects of urbanization,
globalization, and neocolonialism, evident in his/her work
2. Social (Advocate) - the artist expresses what he or she
sees around him or her
- creates an artistic controversy, thereby becoming an agent of
change
3. Physical (Versatile) - the artist finds a need to create
something useful but also pleasing to look at
- creates personal fulfilment but also express a point of view
(examples: The burnay or clay pottery of the Ilocos regions
and the banig or woven mats of the Visayas and Mindanao)
4. Immaterial (Storyteller)- The artist gives form to the
immaterial, the hidden truths of the universe and the spiritual
force that inhabits the world.
- narrating everyday life or extraordinary events; presenting
cultures in different lights and recording and preserving
history for future generations to see

What is the Order of National Artist?
 those who have been proclaimed National Artists are given a Grand
Collar symbolizing their status
 The Order of National Artist (Orden ng Gawad Pambansang Alagad
ng Sining)
 Administered by the National Commision for Culture and the Arts
(NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP)
Insignia of the Order of National Artist
The Insignia
 Composed of Grand Collar featuring circular links portraying the arts,
and an eight-pointed conventionalized sunburst suspended from a
sampaguita wreath in green and white enamel
 The central badge is a medallion divided into 3 equal portions, red,
white and blue with stylized letter Ks
 KKK (CCP's motto)- “katotohanan, kabutihan, at kagandahan”
Criteria for the Order of National Artists:
1. Living artists who are Filipino citizens at the time of
nomination, as well as those who died after theestablishment
of the award on 1972 but were Filipino citizens ar the time of
their death.
2. Artists who, through the content and form of their works,
have contributed in building a Filipino sense of nationhood.
3. Artists who have pioneered in a mode of creative
expression or style, thus earning distinction and making an
impact on succeeding generations f artists
4. Artists who have been created a substantial and significant
body of work and/ or concistently displayed excellenge on
the practice of their art form thus enriching artistic
expression or style
5. Artists who enjoy broad acceptance through:
 Prestigious national and/ or international recognition,
such as the GAwad CCP Para sa Sining, CCP Thireen
Artists Award and NCAA Alab ng Haraya
Critical acclaim and/or reviews of their works
