FAMILY PLANNING
• Family planning to regulate the number and
spacing of children in a family through the
practice of contraception or other methods
of birth control.
• To bring about the wanted birth and to avoid
the unwanted birth.
PURPOSES
1. Raising a child requires significant amounts
of resources: time, social , financial and
environmental. Planning can help assure
that resources are available.
2. To improve the health of the mother
and child.
3. Helping to prevent HIV/AIDS.
CRITERIA FOR IDEAL CONTRACEPTIVE
1. It should be safe for use means free from
any kind of side effects.
2. It should be reliable.
3. It should be easy to administer
and convenient.
4. It should be cost effective.
5. It should be culturally feasible and
acceptable.
GATHER APPROACH
The GATHER approach to counseling--
Greet, Ask, Tell, Help, Explain, and
Return--has documented effectiveness in
FP programs. The more of
the GATHER elements a counselor uses,
the more satisfied clients are with their
care and the more likely they are to
use contraception.
1. G - Greet - Greet the client. She should feel welcome. Build a
rapport with client by greeting the client and making her feel comfortable.
2. A - Ask - Ask questions effectively in a friendly manner using
words that client understands and listen patiently, without being judgmental.
Identify client needs by asking relevant questions about personal, social,
family, medical and reproductive health including reproductive tract
infections, sexually-transmitted diseases, family planning goals and past/
current use of family planning methods.
3. T - Tell - Tell the relevant information to help her reach a
decision and make an informed choice regarding method of EC and ongoing
contraception method.
4. H - Help - Help the client to reach a decision and give other
related information e.g. how to protect herself from STIs.
5. E - Explain - Explain about the method in detail including
information that it protects against a ‘single act’, its efficacy, potential side-
effects and the need for follow-up in case period is delayed by more than 7
days.
6. R - Return - Return for ongoing contraceptive method is advised
and need for follow-up is emphasized if the period is delayed beyond 7 days.
FAMILY PLANNING METHODS
• DEFINITION :- ‘A way of thinking and living
that is adopted voluntarily upon the basis of
knowledge, attitudes and responsible
decisions by Individuals and couples, in order
to promote the health and welfare of the
family group and thus contribute effectively to
the social development of a country.
METHODS OF CONTRACEPTION

a) Physical barrier methods
b) Chemical barrier methods
c) Intra- uterine devices
d) Hormonal methods
e) Post conceptional methods

1. SPACING METHODS
• Help in prevention of pregnancy as long as
they are used.
• These methods can help in timing and spacing
of pregnancies, preventing unwanted children.
These methods are temporary methods.
I. NATURAL METHODS
1. Natural methods do not involve the use of
any of the man made devices.
2. These methods are useful for timing
and spacing of pregnancies.
ABSTINENCE
This involves complete avoidance of
sexual cohabit.
