Grunge movement
The look consisted of barrettes, tiaras, ripped tights, Mary Janes,
slips and Peter Pan collared dresses. Pearl Jam made their mark
on the grunge fashion scene with leather jackets, corduroy
jackets, kilts, shorts-over-leggings, ripped jeans and snapbacks.
The grunge movement created an army of men and women alike
wearing heavy-duty, combat boots. They were tough, gritty and
paired with everything from slip dresses and florals to flannel
shirts and frayed jeans.

Women's fashion
They typically wore slip dresses with flannels, flannels and
ripped jeans, and plaid in layers. Low-rise and ripped, wide-
legged jeans were popular. Bell-bottom jeans from the 1970s
were popular again by 1995, along with the baby-doll T-
shirt. When flannels were worn, they were oversized and when
it became too hot to wear them, they were tied around the
waist.
Hip-hop culture (established in 1989)
• Hip Hop dance clothes such as blousy pants, kufis, Kemetic hats, and Kente cloth hats and large pants. They
adopted the baggy pants, crop tops, big flannels.
• Will Smith’s character in the comedy series “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” became an icon in the classic
fashion trend of the 90’s, always seen as wearing baseball caps, throwback jerseys.
• Will Smith wore one in his 90’s music video “Summertime” as well as Spike Lee in the movie “Do the Right
Thing” where he wore a throwback Brooklyn Dodgers jersey.
• Preppy clothing was popular in the US, where wealthy young men wore khaki slacks, canvas boat shoes, and
navy blue blazers with breast-pocket monogram or gold buttons bearing a family crest. In general, 1990s
preppy was more casual than the almost dandified look of the 1980s as young men
abandoned ascots and Oxford shoes in favor of Nantucket Reds, nautical-striped T-shirts, loafers, and madras
cloth or gingham short-sleeved shirts. Desirable brands included Gap, Old Navy and Abercrombie & Fitch.
Punk culture
• Hardcore punk fashion, which began in the 1970s, was very popular in the 1990s, especially among
the skater subculture. Common items for pop punk and nu metal fans included blond tipped spiky hair, long
under sleeves, black hoodies, and baggy pants in black, mint blue, or red Royal Stewart tartan.
• In the US, psychobilly bands Reverend Horton Heat and Rocket from the Crypt popularized brothel
creepers, gas station shirts and dark-colored bowling shirts during the late 1990s.
