Analyse how cultural variations can influence

communication

What is culture and what can it affect?

Culture can influence communication. Some examples of culture are

religion, ‘norms’ of what you eat, ethnic groups or country of origin.
Culture is about how people make sense of experience. A nurse
should always have information about a patient’s history a patient
should be able to express their thought and feelings so it’s important
to understand people’s culture e.g. some people need to prey at
certain times of the day, Jews don’t eat pork.
What is cultural competence?

Cultural competence is the ability to understand and

communicate with people of different cultures, it’s important
for individual practitioners as well as services and organisations.
It involves developing positive attitudes towards cultural
differences. The 5 principles of cultural competence include,
valuing diversity, self-assessment, accessing cultural knowledge,
dynamics of differences and adapting to diversity. For example,
people who respect diversity and are culturally competent have
to understand the different cultures.
The three religions that are affected by culture that I will be discussing are Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism.

Buddhism- is a group of people who follow the beliefs of Buddha. In all

Buddhism, there is four noble truths, these are, existence is suffering, suffering
has a cause, namely craving and attachment, there is a cessation of suffering (
nirvana).
There are four types of Buddhism these include, Traditional Buddhism and
modern Buddhism, Nikaya Buddhism, Mahayana, Vajrayana Buddhism.
Buddha's teachings are known as “dharma.” He taught that wisdom, kindness,
patience, generosity and compassion were important. Buddhism can affect
culture because Buddhists believe that people will keep being reborn until they
reach enlightenment.

Islam- teaches people that God is unique, all-powerful. IT is shown in scriptures and natural
signs. The six main believes of Islam are “Belief in the existence and oneness of God (Allah).
Belief in the existence of Angels. Belief in the existence of the books of which God is the
author: the Quran (revealed to Muhammad), the Gospel (revealed to Jesus), the Torah
(revealed to Moses), and Psalms to David.”
Hinduism- the most common beliefs are “Truth is eternal,
Brahman is Truth and Reality., The Vedas are the ultimate
authority, Everyone should strive to achieve dharma, Individual
souls are immortal, The goal of the individual soul is moksha.”
Hinduism can affect culture because it is the third most common
religion on the world so it is widely known.

To conclude, I think that culture can have a great affect on people views and perspectives on
others. People go off serotypes of religions but they don’t understand for themselves how culture
affects peoples lives. For example Islamic people might not agree with the Christian beliefs.
