How far are we ?

Distance Formula

by: Pelmar M. Acosta

Objectives
• At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:

– Find the distance between two points in a

coordinate plane.
– Solve problems involving distance.
Time Frame: 1 Hour/ student – centered
instruction: Click on the navigator button to
proceed to the next slide
• To find the distance between two points we use the Distance
Formula

Distance Formula

Distance between two points P(x1, y1) and Q(x2, y2)

is given as

PQ  ( x2  x1 ) 2  ( y2  y1 ) 2
Example1:
Find the distance between the points (1, -7) and (-5, -3).
Answer: P(1, -7) Q(-5, -3)

PQ  ( x2  x1 )2  ( y2  y1 )2

PQ [( 5) 1]2 [( 3)  ( 7)]2

 ( 6)2  42  36 16  52  22 x13

 2 13

In one of their dates, the star
quarterback (Franz) throws a pass from the
10-yard line, 12 yards from the sideline to her
girlfriend Che. The pass is caught on the 45-
yard line, 40 yards from the same sideline.
How long was the pass?
Sho takes the bus from We Station to Our
Station each morning. We Station is 1km Our Station(2,4)
west and 2 km south of City Plaza. Our
Station is 2 km east and 4 km north of City
Plaza. How far does he travel?

• Given ∆ABC with vertices A(-2,5) B(1,-1)
and C(4,2), identify if the triangle is
isosceles, scalene, equilateral. Then find
its perimeter.

• Since the two sides are equal therefore the given triangle
is an isosceles triangle.
