HYDROMETREOLOGICAL

HAZARDS
HYDROMETREOLOGICAL
HAZARDS
- These are hazards involving water
processes.
- Processes of atmospheric or
oceanographic nature that may cause
loss of life, injury, or other health
impacts, property damage, loss of
livelihoods and services, social and
economic disruption, or environmental
damage.
HYDROMETREOLOGICAL
HAZARDS EXAMPLES;
TYPHOON
- A type of violent storm
with strong circular
winds that happens
especially in the Pacific
Ocean.
- Most active tropical
cyclone basin on the
Earth.
MECHANISM/FORMATION
1. Typhoons start off as
tropical thunderstorms.
The strong winds pull in
moisture from the oceans.
2. The thunderstorms
convert the moisture into
heat. The heat cause more
air to flow to the center of
the storm causing
evaporation.
MECHANISM/FORMATION
3. All the heat and air flow toward the eye
creating the typhoon.
MOST VULNERABLE AREAS ON PH

HYDROMETREOLOGICAL
HAZARDS EXAMPLES;
Thunderstorm
- A storm with
thunder and
lightning and
typically also heavy
rain or hail.
-
MECHANISM/FORMATION
On hot summer day the surface of the Earth is
heated by the sun. The Earth’s surface heats
the air just above the surface through the
process of conduction. The action of warm air
rising and cold air sinking (convection) plays a
key role in the formation of thunderstorm. If
the warm surface air is forced to rise, it will
continue to rise, because it is less dense than
the surrounding air. In addition, it will transfer
heat from the land surface to upper levels of
the atmosphere through the process of
convection.
HYDROMETREOLOGICAL
HAZARDS EXAMPLES;
FLASHFLOOD
- A sudden local
flood, typically
due to heavy
rain.
MECHANISM/FORMATION
Flashflood is caused by heavy rain
associated with a severe thunderstorm,
hurricane, tropical storm, or meltwater
from ice or snow flowing over ice sheets or
snowfields.
MOST VULNERABLE PLACES IN PH

HYDROMETREOLOGICAL
HAZARDS EXAMPLES;
STORM SURGE
A rising of the sea as
a result of
atmospheric pressure
changes and wind
associated with a
storm.
MECHANISM/FORMATION
Surrounding the eye wall are clouds that
spiral outward, called spiraling rain bands.
A storm surge is primarily caused by the
relationship between the winds and the
ocean surface. The water level rises where
the winds are strongest. In addition, water
pushed in the direction the winds are
blowing.
MOST VULNERABLE AREAS ON PH
(Coastal areas in Visayas ) (Southern Luzon)
Samar Bicol
Leyte Quezon
Iloilo Metro Manila
Palawan Bulacan
Cebu (Northeastern Mindanao)
Negros Surigao
Bohol

HAZARDS
EL NIÑO
Is an abnormal
weather pattern
caused by the
warming of the Pacific
Ocean near the
equator, off the coast
of South America.
MECHANISM/FORMATION
It occurs when warm water builds up
along the equator in the eastern Pacific.
The warm ocean surface warms the
atmosphere, which allows moisture-rich
air to rise and develop into rainstorm.
MOST VULNERABLE AREAS IN PH
Sulu Zamboanga Del Norte
Basilan North Cotabato

HYDROMETREOLOGICAL
HAZARDS
LA NINA
An irregularly recurring upwelling of
unusually cold water to the ocean surface
along the western coast of South Africa
that often occurs following an El Nino and
that disrupts typical regional and global
weather patterns especially in a manner
opposite to that of El Nino.
MECHANISM/FORMATION
Caused by a build-up of cooler-than-
normal waters in the tropical Pacific , the
area of the Pacific Ocean. Unusually
strong, eastward-moving trade winds and
ocean currents bring this cold water to the
surface, a process known as upwelling.
MOST VULNERABLE AREA IN PH
CARAGA REGION
