SCRAPING
HANDTOOL
SCRAPING
 Scraping is an operation in which very thin
layers of metal are removed (scraped)
with a special cutting tool called a scraper.

PURPOSE OF SCRAPING
 The purpose of scraping is to ensure a tight
leak proof contact of mating surfaces in a
joint. Scraping is applicable to both flat and
curvilinear surfaces; it can be done by hand
or on machine tools

 A metal layer of 0.005 to 0.07 mm thick is

removed with a scraper in one pass, where by
a high accuracy is achieved-up to 30 bearing
spots over a square of 25 x 25 m, and a
surface roughness not higher than 0.32 mm.

USES OF SCRAPING
 Scraping is widely used in tool making as
a finishing process for unhardened
surfaces. The extensive application of
scraping is accounted for by beneficial
properties of the scraped surface, which
are as follows: Compared with ground or
lapped surfaces, a scraped surface is
more wear resistant because it is not
charged with fragments of abrasive
grains

MATERIAL OF SCRAPER
 Scrapers are metal bars of various
forms provided with cutting edges. They
are made from carbon tool steels. The
cutting end of the scraper is hardened
without tempering to 56to64HRC

SCRAPER
 According to the shape of the cutting portion,
scrapers
 flat, three cornered and form types.

 According to then Number of cutting edges

 single-end and double-end types.

 According to design
 integral and inserted blade types

PIGMENT TRANSFERING
 Irregularities on the work surface are
detected by coloring it with pigment. The
scraping pigment is a mixture of
machine oil and Prussian blue.
