INTRODUCTION

RELEVANCE
The idea of a national art gallery to germinate and bear fruit was first mooted in 1949. It was
nurtured by Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru and Maulana Azad.
Vice-president Dr S Radhakrishanan formally inaugurated the NGMA in the presence of Prime
Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and artists and art lovers of the city on March 29, 1954. The choice of
Jaipur House, one of the premier edifices of Lutyens’ Delhi. Designed by architect Charles G
Blomfield and his brother Francis B Blomfield, as a residence for the Maharaja of Jaipur, the
butterfly-shaped building with a central dome was built in 1936.

NEW WING
• To align the New wing with the sitting of
the older building , a free standing
colonnade has been built as a screen
parallel to the rear façade of Jaipur
House.
• In this manner, garden court is formed
between the old and the new building.
• The trees present on the site have been
incorporated into the landscape design of
the complex in a way that screens the
newer buildings.

The New wing has its genesis in the design process
that needed to establish a geometrical order and scale
to the site.
The three proposed blocks are placed orthogonally to the
