large number of stakeholders.
• Researching existing solutions will frequently help users generate new ideas
for how to better perform their business functions.
• It is often cheaper and less risky to buy a solution rather than to build it.
• The danger in exploring existing solutions is that the users and even the
systems analysts may want to buy one of the alternatives immediately. But if
a solution, such as a packaged software system, is purchased too early in the
process, the company’s needs may not be thoroughly investigated.

• The person who does each activity
• The sequential flow of these activities.

• The ovals represent the individual activities in a workflow.
• The black circles denote the beginning and the ending of the workflow.
• The diamond is a decision point at which the flow of the process will either follow
one path or another.
• The heavy solid line is a synchronization bar, which either splits the path into
multiple concurrent paths or recombines concurrent paths.
