INTRODUCTION OF CNE
IN NURSING
• “Let us never consider ourselves as finished nurses…..
• We must be learning all our lives”
• -Florence Nightingale
• The idea of continuing education in nursing is as old as
organized nursing, but the concept of lifelong learning for
the practitioner has developed slowly
• The history of continuing education in nursing has shown
that educational institutions generally have been slow to
accept responsibility for assisting the practitioner who
wishes to add to her nursing knowledge and skill.
DEFINITION
• According to ANA, “Continuing nursing education is
defined as “ planned educational activities intended to
build upon the educational and experiential bases of the
professional nurses for the enhancement of practice ,
education ,administration and research or theory
development to the end of improving the health of the
public .”
• Acc to dictionary of education
• “Continuing education is any extension of opportunities
for reading, study and training to young persons and
adults following their completion of or withdrawal from
full-time school and college programs”
•
NEED IN CNE
• Rapid technological advances related to knowledge
explosion have greatly altered the practice of nursing
• The gap between scientific knowledge and its
application grows wider each year as a result of
multiple influences
• Elimination of certain illnesses, particularly the
communicable diseases
• New drugs to cure some illnesses and alter the course
of many
• Surgeries are being performed successfully in areas
that would not have been attempted 10-20 years ago

PLANNING FOR CONTINUING
EDUCATION PROGRAMME

Planning is the key stone for the administrative

process .without adequate planning ,
continuing education offerings are
fragmented and often unrelated. A successful
continuing education programme is the result
of careful and detailed planning.
• Effective planning is required at all
levels, local , state , regional and
national and eventually international to
avoid publication of efforts and to help
keep at minimum gap in meeting the
continuing education needs of nurses.
•
•
THE PLANNING FORMULA

• WHAT IS TO DONE?
• WHY IS IT NECESSARY?
• HOW IS IT TO BE DONE?
• WHERE IS IT TO BE DONE?
• WHEN IS IT TO BE DONE?
• WHO SHOULD DO THE JOB?

STEPS IN CONTINUING
PROGRAMME DEVELOPMENT
In order to increase the probability that continuing
education programs have an impact on professional
competence performance , the following steps are
helpful :-
• Identify problem that focus on health care.
• Analyze needs or problems to determine if there is a
potential educational solution.
• Identify potential facilitators of and barriers to the
learning process.

CONT……
 Select educational needs based on a priority system.
 State educational goals and objectives for the selected
needs.
 Select or design a learning experience to meet the goals
and objectives.
 Implement the learning experience.
 Evaluate the extent to which learners achieved objectives.
 Determine the extent to which the original problems has
been reduced.
 Identify and additional tasks necessary to meet the need
based on evaluation data.

STEPS IN CONDUCTING CONTINUING
EDUCATION IN NURSING
 Conduct needs assessment
 Establish overall goals
 Conduct task analysis
 Specify objectives
 Develop assessment strategies
 Select methods and media
 Produce materials
 Conduct formative evaluation (revise as required)
 Conduct summative evaluation
CONDUCT NEED ASSESSMENT

Needs assessment is a critical of a

systematic approach to developing
educational project with in the
organization. The approach to
needs assessment in continue
education for the health
professional is systematic process
based on a carefully developed
plan.
ESTABLISH OVERALL GOALS
After assessing the needs the organizer such
as a hospital personnel department must
formulate the overall goals for organizing
continuing nursing education program.the
goal must be based on the needs assessment
of their employees and it should be practical
, agreeable and attainable.
CONDUCT TASK ANALYSIS
Organizing continuing nursing education is a
challenging task which requires a careful
analysis. this involves various small activities
which should be carefully analyzed . this
involves the program content , preparation ,
delivery , audio-visual materials and method
budget for the program , the output to be
achieved etc . each one of these requires careful
planning and implementation. So a task analysis
helps the organizer to prepared for the program.
SPECIFY OBJECTIVE
The specific objective can be formulated which should be
measureable, observable and verifiable. The specific
objective formed should be directly related to the needs
assessment of the learner . the directs the organizer to
prepare for the content and to choose the method s of
teaching and materials used for teaching . it also help them
in developing the evaluation strategies.
It helps the learner to recognize and realize what to be
learned out of participating such continuing nursing
education program.
DEVELOP ASSESSMENT
STRATEGIES
The next step is selection and formulating
assessment strategies to evaluate at the end of
the program. The evaluation strategies are
decided based on the topic , content the level
of the learner the domain to be evaluated the
time factors etc. a well planned and prepared
evaluation tool helps in assessing the learner
which gives the organizer the effectiveness of
such program in fulfilling the objective and
goals.
•
SELECT METHODS AND MEDIA
The methods for continuing nursing education be a
seminar , workshop , demonstration , panel discussion
etc. any methods of teaching can be used but it should
help the learner to achieve the specific objectives . it also
should be based on the number of participants the content
and the duration of the program. The media includes
audio media , video and print media. Any one or the
combination of these can be used.
PRODUCE MATERIAL

It is the phase where the actual

education programe is conducted
using the predetermined methods
and media. It involves the actual
participation of the learn.
CONDUCT FORMATIVE
EVALUATION
Formative evaluation is an ongoing
evaluation which is done while the
programme is in progress. It gives the
immediate feedback to the organizer. based
on the evaluation, revision can be done when
it is required.
CONDUCT SUMMATIVE
EVALUATION

It is the final evaluation done at the end the

programme. it helps the organizer to review
the whole program and to analyse the
success of the program. it also helps them to
identify the areas of improvement
modification budgetary controls and others.
ELEMENTS ESSENTIAL FOR
SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION OF
CONTINUING EDUCATION

• A recognized need for continuing nursing.

• The availability of nursing faculty with diverse
areas or expertise.
• A working relationship between an accrediated
provider of CNE programme and nursing
faculty.
•
IMPLICATIONS OF CONTINUING
EDUCATION
Continuing education sessions are ideal place for
representatives from each agency to speak about their
experience with patient with a specific health problem.

EDUCATION ACTIVITIES
Continuing education programs are evaluated by the
providing units. The issues related to continuing education
evaluation are :-
Is there some logical relationship between the planned
education project and the identified needs of participant in
relation to their practice responsibilities.
What is the evidence that the program actually attended to
the learning needs of participants .
CONT…..
• Are the project goals and objective stated
appropriately.
• What evidence is there that the goals and
objectives of the project have been achieved.
• Are the selection , orientation and motivation of
the faculty effectives.
• Is the program cost effective.
