Perineal Care
• Washing or cleansing of
the external genitalia,
perineum, anal area and
surrounding area.
Perineal Care is also
referred to “pericare” or
“perineal-genital care”

• To be given as part of the bath but may also be done
at other times if necessary
• To remove abnormal vaginal discharges to prevent
infection and promote healing (used as prescribed
treatment that is performed at specific intervals)

1. Assess perineum for swelling, redness, excoriation (type of
erosion) and presence of odor

4. State the purpose of the procedure
5. Explain the procedure to the client/ patient.
6. Wash hands prior to the procedure
7. Assemble all necessary equipments/
materials
8. Place waterproof pad under patient.

9. Place patient on bed pan in dorsal recumbent
position with knees flexed and separated.
10.Drape patient with perineal area exposed
11. Apply clean gloves.

•13. Pour warmed irrigating solution gently vulva from
a sterile pitcher.

with cherry balls held in a
sponge holder, use a
front-to-back direction
and discard each sponge
in a plastic or paper bag
after one use. Use sterile
materials if there is an
open wound. (Note:
should follow the correct
technique)

•15. Dry perineal area using dry cherry balls in same
fashion as for cleansing.

20. Evaluate using the following criteria:
a. Patient’s response to treatment
b. Signs and symptoms of undesirable responses
to treatment
c. Patient’s comfort
21. Report significant findings that need immediate
attention to the nurse supervisor/ physician
22. Document and record findings in the chart using
appropriate terminologies.
