The Correlation between

Grammatical Competency and

the Goal Orientation of Fourth-
Year Education Students of
Divine Mercy College Inc.
Chapter 1
• Philippines was tagged as the world’s best country in business English
proficiency

• Various studies reveal that the quality of education in the Philippines

is continuously declining.
Self Regulated Learning
• The learners is one responsible for their own learning.
• This “active, constructive process" (Pintrich, 2003) is called self-
regulated learning (SRL).
• First, as the learner’s ability to use metacognitive strategies or to
control cognition
• A second view refers to SRL as the learner’s ability to use both
metacognitive and cognitive learning strategies (Schoenfeld, 1992).
• third view highlights the importance of incorporating motivation,
cognitive, and metacognitive components of learning (Tanner &
Jones, 2003)
Goal Orientation
• Mastery Goal
 Develop new skills
 Trying to understand their work
 Improving the level of competence
(achieving mastery on self refence standard)
• Performance Goal
 Focus on their ability and self worth
 Determine their ability w/ reference by besting other students
 Surpassing others and receiving public recognition
(superior performance)
Goal Oriented and Self Regulated
• Target and Purpose goal
• Task Specific Goal and Goal Orientation

• Target/ Task specific goal – represent specific outcome that the

individual attempting to accomplish.

• Purpose goal/ Goal Orientation –Individual general orientation.

• Statement of the Problem
• Demographic profile of the fourth-year students in terms of :
• Age?
• Gender?
• Program
• Is there a difference between the intrinsic and extrinsic goal orientation of the
fourth-year students?
• Is there a correlation between the grammatical competency and intrinsic goal
orientation?
• Is there a correlation between the grammatical competency and extrinsic goal
orientation?

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE

Goal -Orientation (Extrinsic and Intrinsic goal orientation)

). According to Gottfried (2005) intrinsically oriented students had been
found to be more competent in school,

intrinsically oriented persist longer, conquer more challenges, and

demonstrate accomplishments in their academic endeavors than those
who are extrinsically oriented (Pintrich & Garcia, 1991).
Some students tend to pursue a course in college out of expectancy or
because it’s dictated by their family

Biehler & Snowman, (2000) believe that extrinsic goals factors diminish
students’ intrinsic goals, because the focus tend to lean more on
acceptance from peers and earning of rewards
• On 2010 Nadia Ayub conducted a research in goal orientation
intrinsic and extrinsic.

• Results suggest that intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and academic

performance were correlated. In addition to her findings the results
also suggested that their gender plays a role in their goal orientation.
Learning Grammar

• . According to Chris De La Cruz, (2010) General Manager at the

"Many people are just too shy to speak because we have a culture of
making fun of others who are trying to learn and speak English
According to Jenkins (2009) research on attitudes towards English as
Lingua Franca in East Asian context reveals that many English speakers
still cling to the notion that only near-native accents are acceptable,
and that the quality of an English accent can only be evaluated in
relation to its closeness to British or American varieties
Grammatical Competence

• . Noam Chomsky stated that all human beings have innate grammar
knowledge, which he called competence,

• Sesnan (2001) claims if a person knows thousands of words in English

but does not know how to organize them then that person is not
grammatically competent.
• ) Marco Tulio Artunduaga Cuéllar presented an action research study
on grammatical competence in a group of third semester students in
an English language
• The study intended to find an effective and meaningful way to
develop this competence in a contextualized manner and writing was
the selected medium. The results indicate that the use of writing
activities to develop grammar generates a mutually enriching process
as both linguistic elements are enhanced.
Locally, the same topic of research was carried and conducted at a
University in Manila. On March (2015) Romualdo Mabuan

It aimed to determine the views of students in the acquisition of

English grammar competency, to identify, and analyze grammatical
errors in students
• Results showed that the most pervasive errors committed by the
participants were tenses, subject-verb agreement, prepositions,
morphology.
