INTRODUCTION

❖ Limited quantity of resources.

❖ Resource to get their maximum.
❖ The limitations of gear manufacturing is overcome by this.
❖ Complex, time taking, need of high precision.
❖ Structure of elbow mechanism is simple.
❖ This system is also known as L pin & orbital transmission mechanism.
❖ It is very useful to transmit power in right angles.
❖ It can also transmit power at obtuse or acute angles.

2
NEED OF POWER TRANSMISSION USING ELBOW MECHANISM

❖ Today’s world requires speed on each and every field.

❖ Engineers are constantly confronted to the challenges of efficient transmission of power.
❖ Low cost to manufacture .
❖ It is needed to further increase the efficiency of transmission which cannot be done using geared
transmission.
❖ Power transmission using elbow mechanism is capable of transmitting power at any angle without any gears
being manufactured.

3
WORKING

❖ Transmit the power between two shafts whose axes are at 0-90 degree through bend links.
❖ This three links slide relatively according to the motion given to input shaft.
❖ One supporting link or connecting link with the shaft which is in the same axis of the shafts are
at the centre also fixed.
❖ Due to this the rotational motion of input shaft is converted to sliding motion of links which is
then converted to rotational motion of the output shaft.

5
SYSTEM STUDY

❖ It generally consist of 2 hubs, 3 elbow rod, 2 shafts, ac motor, belt drive.

❖ The belt drive is connected to the end of one of the shafts.
❖ The shaft and the hub is rotated by the belt drive mechanism.
❖ The other three rods which are independent of the shaft but which have the degree of freedom in the x axis
and -x axis (sliding motion).
❖ Transmit the power by the hinch mechanism to the next set of output roads(angular degree of freedom ).

ADVANTAGES

❖ Ease of manufacturing.
❖ Complete freedom of interchangeability.
❖ Power could be transferred to any desired angle.
❖ Misalignment of shafts can be tolerated to some extent.
❖ Simpler cooling system.
❖ Low cost of manufacturing.
❖ Portability of parts.

10
LIMITATIONS

❖ Does not work at very low starting torque.

❖ Improper hole drilling could pose much problem.
❖ Sudden load would cause mechanism breakdown.
❖ Links are to be replaced after certain cycle time.
❖ Speed ratio is always constant 1:1.

11
APPLICATIONS

❖ Tower clocks.
❖ Gang drilling( multi spindle drilling).
❖ CNC lathe.
❖ Movement of periscope in submarines.
❖ Angular drilling between 0-90 degree.
❖ Hand driven machine like juice makers, sheet folding machines etc.

12
POSSIBLE ADVANCES

❖ Torque bearing capacity can be improved.

❖ Flexible bent links can be used.
❖ Has a bright future in automation and robotics.

13
CONCLUSION

❖ The model works correctly as per the design.

❖ With the help of this system, we can efficiently reduce the cost in power transmissions.
❖ Minimum 3 Nos. of links should be used for the transmission to be possible.
❖ This mechanism can give up to 92 % efficiency.
❖ The rods should be equally spaced in the hub ( If 3 links then 360/3 = 120 0 ).
❖ Further advancement in this technology can be made.
