Main Parts of P.T./C.V.T. -
1. Top Tank
2. Primary Terminal ( P1)
3. Insulator Column
4. Bottom Tank
5. Secondary Terminal Box
6. T/F Oil
8
Name Plate details of PT/CVT

A. Rated Voltage – 245kV, 420kV

B. Voltage Ratio – Primary To
Secondary
C. 245kV/110V(3 core)
D. 420kV/110V(3 core)

9
Top Tank -
A.Primary Terminal (one stud/clamp)
- HV conductor connected.
B. Oil level gauge Glass
C.Oil filled upto 60% of Top glass

10
Top Tank -
D. Hermetically Sealed( No Nitrogen gas)
E. If not hermetically sealed – Nitrogen gas filled
in empty part above oil level.
F. Valve at top to top up Nitrogen gas.

11
Primary Terminal -

A. Primary Terminal .
B. Copper alloy with Silver coating
C. Conductor connected to Al. or copper clamp

12
Vertical Porcelain Insulator

A. Special shape given

B. Creepage Distance.

13
Bottom Tank -

A. Completely filled with T/F oil.

B. Secondary terminal box
C. Secondary terminals- outside
D. Wires to Voltmeter, Relays

14
Use of PT/CVT
A. Measurement of Primary Voltage
B. Protection system

15
Difference - PT/CVT
A. PT - Pri. & Sec. are wound on magnetic
core
B. (i) CVT – Pri. Voltage – applied to series
capacitor group.
(ii) Voltage across one of the capacitor is
taken to aux. VT
(iii) Sec. O/P of aux. voltage T/F is taken
for measurement & protection.
16
17
Transformer Oil -

A. EHV grade oil.

B. Fresh, Filtered.

18
CVT – Coupling Capacitor/VT
Consists of 3 parts –
Two Capacitors – across which line voltage
is split
Inductive element used to tune the device
to the supply frequency
Transformer used to isolate and further
step-down the voltage for the
instrumentation or protective relay.
19
CVT - useful in communication
system.CVTs in combination with wave
traps are used for filtering the high
frequency communication signals from
power frequency.Thus forms carrier
communication network throughout the
grid.
It serves as a coupling capacitor for
coupling high frequency power line
carrier signal to the transmission line.
20
Maintenance -

A. Quarterly.
B. Annual.

21
Quarterly Maintenance

A. Tightening of Primary terminal connections.

B. No loose nut/bolts .
C. No oil leakage
D. Tightening of Secondary Connections
E. Clean surface of porcelain insulator.

22
Annual Maintenance/Diagnostic
Testing
A. Insulation Resistance Measurement.
A.1 5kV Megger .
A.2 Apply between Pri. To earth .
A.3 Apply for 60 Seconds.
A.4 Mega Ω or Gega Ω or >

23
IR value unsatisfactory-how to
improve?
B.1 Clean insulator surface with
CTC
B.2 Use cotton cloth to clean
B.3 Remove all dirt/dust from
surface
