CFST Columns

• A composite structural material

• Consisting of steel tube in-filled
with concrete
• Diameter of steel tube 400mm
to 1120mm.
• D/t ratio = 16 to 90
CFST Sections

Why CFST ?
(Structural View)
 Concrete core delays buckling of steel tube

 Concrete core prevents inward local buckling

* Steel tube confines the concrete core

* Large load bearing capacity, better ductility

* Saving of construction cost, time and manpower

* Composite effect of steel (high tensile strength)

Confined v/s Unconfined Concrete
Confined concrete means:

* Increase in compressive
strength
* Increase in corresponding
strain
 Increase in ductility
* Humid environment offered
by steel tube to concrete
core(lesser drying shrinkage
and creep)
* Sharing of axial load by
steel tube
Preparation Of CFST Specimen

• Concrete mixes are prepared using PPC, crushed

granite jelly and river sand. (IS 10262-1982).
• Steel tube is roughened with a grinder to increase
bond b/w steel & concrete
• Concrete is filled in the tube in 3 layers & each
compacted with 25 strokes
• Curing in the water tank for 28 days
Finite Element Model Analysis
*Discretization of a structure into finite number of
elements, connected at finite number of points called
nodes.
*The material properties and the governing relationships
are considered over these elements and expressed in
terms of nodal displacement at nodes.
*The loading and constraints results in a set of equations
governing the structural response are prepared.
*Solutions of these equations give the response of the
structure.
*Having a strong mathematical base, FEM can be easily
Finite Element Model
Failure Modes Of CFST Columns
* Local buckling of the structural steel accompanied
with crushing of concrete infill.

900 mm Long Column fail by buckling close to mid height

Advantages Of CFST Columns

• The steel column acts as permanent and integral

formwork.
• The steel column provides external reinforcement.
• The steel column supports several levels of
construction prior to concrete being pumped.
• The presence of steel tube minimizes the need for
rebar fixing which is one of the most tedious
work packages in the RC construction.
Applications Of CFST Columns

• Commonly used in tall & super tall buildings.

• Preferred for many seismic resistant structures.

• Used as bridge piers that are continuously
subjected to impact from traffic.
• Support for storage tanks ,Railway decks.
• Columns in high-rise buildings and as piles.
Conclusions
• Issue of corrosion of CFST structures when exposed to air
and humidity, thus they have to be painted periodically
causing higher maintenance costs.
• In the composite columns, the concrete delays the buckling
when compressively loaded which enhances the capacity of
the element.
• CFST structures are not fireproof.
• The enhancement of strength in the case of CFST columns
depends on the compressive strength of filled concrete and
on the confinement effect.
• When recycled aggregate concrete is used instead of plain
concrete, a cost saving in concrete can be achieved
providing higher compressive strength.
