NATO in Afghanistan – Resolute
Support
• Established on 01 Jan 2015, following ISAF

• Non-combat mission

• Provides training, advice and assistance to Afghan security forces and

institutions

• Most significant operational commitment of NATO

• Led by JFC Brunssum (BS)

• The legal basis: invitation from Afghan Gov., NATO SOFA and UNSCR
2189 from 12 Dec 2014

NATO in Kosovo – KFOR

• Established on Jun 1999

• 3,500 allied and partner troops operate in Kosovo as part of Kosovo

Force (KFOR)

• Contributes to maintaining a safe a secure environment in Kosovo

• Led by JFC Neaples (NP)

• The legal basis: UNSCR 1244 from 10 Jun 1999

NATO and Mediterranean Sea –
Operation Sea Guardian
• Launched on Nov 2016, replacing former Operation Active Endeavour

• Non-article 5 maritime security operation in Mediterranean

• Three main tasks:

• maritime situational awareness,
• counter terrorism at sea
• enhance capacity-building

• Led by MARCOM

NATO Mission Iraq

• Launched in 2018, after Brussels Summit

• Several hundred NATO trainers involved (stopped atm)

• Non-combat training and capacity-building mission

• Focusing on:
• Counter IED
• Civil-military planning
• Armored vehicles maintenance
• Military medicine
• Strenghtening Iraqi military institutions
• Training Iraqi instructors

Assistance for the refugee and migrant crisis

• Started on Feb 2016, on the request of Germany, Greece and Turkey

• Contributing to international efforts to stem illegal trafficking and illegal

migration in the Aegean Sea

• Provides ISR capabilities in the Aegean Sea and Turkish-Syrian border

• Maritime forces deployed in the Aegean Sea
